Rollerman 290 #2 Posted January 10, 2008 Ben I have a 1045 myself. I need to find a better hood ...mine has a wrinkle in the grille I'm not happy about. They have a neat look with the old style fenders & the newer square hood! The pic's not current...it's now sitting at the back of the shop all done...minus hood & decals. Steve, I think the 1045's were only made one year 1965 with the older style rear round fender and sqaure hood. Ben
Rollerman 290 #4 Posted January 10, 2008 You are right Ben, only sold in 1965 & limited numbers. They are one of the transitional model since they have the features of 2 era's. I have been told & read they were actually built in 1964 but were sidelined since the round hood would not fit over the Kohler K241 10HP? I'm sure someone will chime in with the facts. Say Ben what the old car in the back ground by the garage "off topic please"

I have been told & read they were actually built in 1964 but were sidelined since the round hood would not fit over the Kohler K241 10HP? Steve, The Wheel Horse model 1045 was built for a few only months in 1964, from August to October 1964. The number "5" in 1045 stands for electric start and "4" stand for year of manufacture. You are doing a good job on your restoration as I see yours has the original correct types tires, the tires on the front were only used on the 1045 of which no other Wheel Horse model used this tire. The Goodyears on the back are the same way. The hood on a 1964 model 1045 is different from other 1965 to 1967 square hood models, if you compare the front of the 1045 hood where the decal would go to a '65 to '67 you will see the indentations are not the same. My 1045 is still being restored , it is completely original and a real power house to drive! I have put my 1045 in a few tractor pulls while the mower deck was still on ..... even the drive belt to the deck still in place! Mine still has the original serial number decal that was used only in 1964. Bill in Richmond, Va.
Rollerman 290 #11 Posted January 11, 2008 Bill thanks for the info! Like I said I wasn't clear on the true year & have been told differant things...ie made in 64 but sold as a 65 in 1965.... ...I guess this means I need to change my signature? I still have the serial number decal too & will put it back on when I'm finished with her. Mine came with the 42" RM425 deck. The tires are in great shape & I'm lucky for that. I'll have to take a look at my hood again & compare it to my 1055.
kpinnc 14,651 #12 Posted January 11, 2008 Ben and Stephen, those are very nice machines. You gotta love that look- round fenders, square hood. I'm sure wishin my Bronco had round fenders right now. There's alot more room back there on those machines! Kevin

TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #17 Posted January 11, 2008 I have a 1045 myself. I need to find a better hood ...mine has a wrinkle in the grille I'm not happy about. Hey Stephen -- I have a hood, but it's off of an 855. I'll investigate it further if you're not concered about the difference of the front panel that Bill Pearson described. I haven't looked at it in a while, so don't get your hopes too high. Here it is still on the tractor:
Rollerman 290 #18 Posted January 11, 2008 When I bought my 1045 the PO had put a standard oil pan K301 in it. To make it fit he added a block of wood between the hood & the hinge & bent it the rest of the way till it fit. It's these little details like the front of the hood that blow me away when guys such as Bill or yourself "TT" point out. So yes I'll be in the market for a correct hood...but will probably use a 65 or later for the time being. :P
combatmp29r 27 #19 Posted January 11, 2008 Its amazing sometimes the little detail changes between one year or another. Or even one tractor or another of the same years. :D
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #20 Posted January 11, 2008 That's why I like this site and it's membership. Here we have a thread on a restored 1045 and as an added bonus, we get more info that isn't readily available. This time it's a couple of little tidbits, first the transitional topic - square hood, small, older type fenders. Then, as icing there is the additional info about the different hoods used on the 1045. For me, this is great. Thanks, guys. See you can teach an old dog new tricks. :D
