rem722 26 #1 Posted September 16, 2015 Hi guys,I have a 603, belt is 1/2" x 70". Belt is not a new one. Problem is trans pulley keeps turning when clutch is depressed, making it not nice to put in gear. The trans pulley is 4" in diameter. Don't know what I'm missing. Any help would be appreciated, John
stevasaurus 23,274 #2 Posted September 16, 2015 That is the correct belt and pulley. Do you have the belt guard on the horse? The belt guard funnels slack toward the engine pulley when you push in the clutch thus enabling the trans input pulley to stop. Actually, the belt guard is your clutch.
Ed Kennell 41,800 #3 Posted September 16, 2015 Steve knows Trannys. No belt guard = no clutch
stevasaurus 23,274 #4 Posted September 16, 2015 Another thing...if you do have the belt guard on and you are still having the problem...try cleaning the pulleys with mineral spirits and maybe lightly wipe the belt also. If any of those are dirty/sticky, it can also cause your problem.

stevasaurus 23,274 #6 Posted September 16, 2015 (edited) What a difference a guard makes. Clean your pulleys any way, you will get smoother starts.I have to tell you...that is something I learned here on Red Square a few years ago...guess how? Ed Kennell 41,800 #7 Posted September 16, 2015 (edited) You are not alone Rem. This is a common problem we have all experienced when we change our first drive belt. Logic tells us to test the operation before installing the belt guard. Just thought of another potential belt guard problem. Some of the guards have one or more belt guide tabs. If your guard has these tabs, make sure you get the belt on the correct side of the tab. The belt should ride on the arched side of the tab.
