Brake shaft gear woodruff key

When I got the trans apart I found the brake shaft woodruff key sheared. Wonder what might have caused that. I also found the shifter gears ground off bad. Think maybe someone thought it was a synchronized shift transmission. I will have to get a key for it. I think it should be a hardened key.

No, it is not a hardened key.  Either get it from your favorite TORO dealer, or TSC and ACE carry them.  Do you need to replace some gears?  What kind of horse are we talking here?  ")  A little information and some pictures could go a long way.
