312-8 Uni-Drive Diff/Trans questions

Recommended Posts

Tony in Australia

Hi, Tony way down very south again. I have spent days just reading through the post, there is a lot of very good advice and guidance you guys are giving keep up the good work.

I have the old girl running and the trans now drives while on stands (haven't put it down yet). But I do have a few questions Unit is 24-12K806 0816hours on the clock.

Q1. Did they make limited slip diffs,  if so how do I tell, did the trans feel up as stated in an other post, but I did it a little bit different. I put it in gear with drive belt off and rolled the wheels through all gears and high and low range watching the input pulley spin and checked to see if I could stop it from moving but could not.

Q2. The diff/trans is covered in old oil so guessing the axle seals could be shot, can they be changed without cracking open the trans?

Q3. While stopping one wheel from moving and rocking the other wheel back and forth there is some gear slap, about 1/8 of and inch at the hub or 1 1/4 at the top inside of the wheel, is this to much or what is to much. My concern is in if it needs a rebuild, where could I can the parts and not have to take out an other mortgage to cover the rebuild.

Q4. What indicators would you use to determine a trans re-build is required?  The axles do have movement in and out of the diff about 1/8 or less.

I guess I will know a lot more once I get to out into the yard and give it a good go a round.

Thanks again

Tony

No limited slip..with rear wheels up and tranny in neutral spin one wheel the other will turn opposite direction if it is an open differential... will spin same direction if limited slip

Seals can be changed from the outside
All your movements seem to be in acceptable range.

What would be unacceptable is any up down or front to rear movement in an axle.

The 5060 transmission has a 10-pinion limited slip differential. You've got an 8-pinion. I agree with Paul on the play. :)

Thanks so much Paul and Racinbob, so glad I don't have to tear it down.
