dewdew 10 #1 Posted September 5, 2015 (edited) My 76 d160 manual calls for a premium 10w30/40 motor oil I've talked to a few guys that say to use a hydraulic fluid that is made for the newer what should I use? Edited September 5, 2015 by dewdew
daveoman1966 3,839 #2 Posted September 5, 2015 IMHO.....Use the premium motor oil that the ORIGINAL manual calls for....can't go wrong with that. Some of the hydro fluids have additives / cleaners / etc that may or may not be good for the brass parts of the Sundstrand hyro pump and mydro motor. .

shelbyv8 6 #5 Posted September 6, 2015 I use Rotella T 15-40 Diesel oil, It has better shear factors for gears. I used it in motorcycles for years where the transmission ran in the motor oil. The 15-40 is a little heaver than is called for, but if it gets down to 40 degrees around here we think we are going to freeze to death. It comes in different weights and synthetic. Less than $15.00 for a 4 qt jug at Walmart.
daveoman1966 3,839 #6 Posted September 6, 2015 The fluid for Sundstrand autos thru 1973 was ATF. Why the switch to SAE motor oil.... I don't know. Maybe a guru here has that answer...Either Hi-end brand fluid is suitable but not to mix them. The more important issue is the filter and its dynamics. Inasmuch as the OEM Toro filter 79-5270 is yet available for under $15.... why not. If you save 3 or 4 bux with an after-market filter having different micron filter ratings, either the oil flow will be restricted too much, or too little. The latter...too little...MAY lead to premature failure due to excessive wear.Again...just IMHO... as always.
