Commando/310-8

Will the attachments ( mower deck/ snow blade) for a 1987 310-8 fit a 1972 Commando 800 ? I am trying figure out whether it would be worth the money to get the Commando back up and running again. The Kohler motor died many years ago and I replace with a Techy  10hp ( I know bad move). Techy 10hr died in 2009 and deck had problems. So I parked the Commando 800 under tarps where it has set ever since. If the attachments on the 310-8 work on the Commando, I know I got to get a motor. What is the probability of get a good used Kohler with 10 to 12 hp? I  sure cannot afford a new Kohler motor. I will need drive belt , seat and wiring, new battery. The rest of Commando was in good working order when parked. I want another work WH like the 310-8. Would be worth spending the money or would I be shovel the coin  down the Rat Hole. Or should I look for a WH in the 300-400 series that is up and running. Can some one explain the short frame , long frame differences. Please give me some examples of each? I think the Commando and 310-8 are short frame units . ( right or wrong.)  Thanks in advance for you help.

Since you are a Supporter I will jump in there and say get it running. I'm not as well versed on the old short frame Wheel Horses as some of the other Supporters here on RS but go ahead and find a Kohler and get it running again. Its all nuts and bolts, and you will be happy to have saved another Wheel Horse.  I think you can adapt the newer style front mule drive system to the older short frame chassis. Thank you for being a Supporter, and I hope someone can assist you in putting together the right parts to get the Commando adapted to the 310 attachments. Edited by Wheel-N-It

Good idea, save the old stuff, being old myself I have a vested interest!   :text-lol:

The last of the short frames was built in 1966, take a look at the 1056 and the 1067 and you will see the difference. As Van said, you will need to use the newer mule drive and the belt size will have to be trial and error, but that is easy. Putting a 10 or 12 HP motor under the hood won't be a problem and you should be able find a running unit.

As you start the project remember, :wwp:.

thanks for replies . The heart wants to put the Commando back to work but I am not sure the wallet or the head of the house would agree with that decision. Funny that you and Wheel-N-It both mentioned attachments and mule. When I first got the 310-8, the mule looked it was used a battering ram, so I took the Mule off the Commando and it fit without any problems . The deck on the 310-8 looks exactly like the deck I had on the Commando.

Do you have any idea on the cost of a used motor. New motors cost more the cars I have purchased.
