What is the gas tank supposed to look like on the 400?

OK. This is what I have. What do you think it came from? Can I use it without any problems?

In post #36 here, you mentioned you rec'd another 8hp Kohler in the deal...
What I'm assuming is, you're holding the the tank for that engine.
:dunno:

Well, as long as the tank fits under the hood, I guess for now that's what I have to work with.

I do not have the strainer to mount below the tank, so I'm assuming it will be OK to install a pipe nipple on the tank and regular fuel hose with an inline fuel filter. The strainer doesn't have anything to do with fuel pressure, does it? It looks like the fuel delivery was just gravity feed. Once again, I'm not the expert yet on anything round hood.

I'm still trying to catalog all the parts in the two boxes I was given. I don't yet know what I don't have to get this Suburban moving. It looks like once I figure out the idler pulley and fuel system it can be driven.

Nobody will know if you don't have a correct tank unless they kneel down to look under there. No big deal unless you are trying to go factory correct.
No need for the glass bowl strainer, fuel filter will work just fine. You can still buy those glass bowl strainers new for under $10 if you want one.

Found the instruction/parts manual for the blower if you need it

The only issue might be the straps. But that should be easy to solve with careful rebending and using longer bolts under the tank to tie the straps together.

I'm thinking that 8HP tank is taller and will make the outlet lower than the carb... not ideal on a gravity fed setup. I could be mistaken though.

Oh yea, good point. The original tank is 5" for you top compare. You mentioned that the PO was still digging stuff out. Maybe contact him and see if he's got the original.

Hopefully he does and its not full of rust! The  larger tank might be able to be used if the outlet is below the carb and the tank is kept more towards full.  Correct me if I'm wrong guys  but a problem might be the weight of the full tank on the hood.  Personnaly I like the OEM sediment bowls - gives it that "big" tractor look and they have a shut off if leaks spring up. I believe my Sub tank has an 1/8" npt female thread on it and it has a a close !/8"  nipple to connect tank to bowl.

Yes, the weight can be a problem. It's a good idea not to trailer it with a full tank. The straps break the spot welds. I agree about liking the sediment bowls. That's why I bought one for my Suburban.:)

OK. Next question. The lubrication guide states for the 5010 trans to use 90-140 gear lube. Can't find that, but can get 85-140 or 80-90. I already have a bunch of 80-90 on hand. Will there be an issue with the 80-90?

I've been using 80-90 gear oil with no problems

These are new holes, probably the PO attempting to mount the gas tank straps without welding. What do you think about this? I haven't noticed holes drilled in any original hood pictures.

That's exactly why they are there.
Use them to bolt on new straps or weld new straps and fill those holes but you'll need to paint the hood.

You guys are great, just in case you haven't been recognized for your wealth of knowledge and eagerness to help.

I'm just going to make some new straps out of steel banding (clamp material) instead of trying to clean up and reshape old ones. One trick we use in my industry is to line the inside of band clamps with felt. It serves two purposes with pipe organs (I build them for a living)--seals any tiny leakage and dampens vibration. In this case I'm hoping to remove any chance of noise. I was thinking of riveting the straps via the holes, and tacking them with a welder. But bolting would be quicker and removable. I'll see what mood I'm in when I get to it.

I agree with slammer. 80w90 is fine.
That's what the holes in the hood were for. The issue I have with bolted on straps is that the tank will be against the bolts/nuts. Also it will drop the filler down. It's pretty easy to extend the filler neck so you may want to do that if you go the bolt route.

What is the belt cover supposed to look like? Mine is not correct--it's only got room for the engine pulley and the drive pulley. That's probably why the PO has a belt attaching just those 2 pulleys. I'm not sure how he expected to shift.

Or is this an additional cover for attachment belts?

Sediment bowls look cool but they leak all the time. I run a nipple and a shutoff then a filter.

I like the idea of felt on the straps and even the top of the tank to prevent abrasion. If you are going to use that tank and the outlet is below the carb inlet I would just use maybe a 1/8" street ell on the outlet with filter & fuel cock if desired.
The belt guard should have more of a pork chop shape..... will try and post a pic...... RJ guards are close but no cigar....

idler/clutch setup should look somethin like this...

Less all the gunk of course!!:o

The bolt you see with the spacer between the idler and input sheave is wht holds the guard on. Ther should also be one on the engine.

@‌casualobserver told me  that the early Suburban  belt guards are unique and sadly rare to find, :crying-yellow: sorry no pic of it here maybe one of the other guys has one. Should really have one.... 'specially if little ones are going to ride it.

Here's the Suburban belt guard. This one is a reproduction.

It's my understanding that the very early Suburban guards the triangle wasn't quite as pronounced. Somewhere between the RJ guards and mine. The later 60's and 61's were as pictured.
