jimmacha 0 #1 Posted July 24, 2015 I just recently picked up a Model 400 w/16 hp Kohler engine and manual 8-speed. Per the receipt, it was sold new in southwestern Wisconsin in late March of 1989. The VIN tag is gone. The only real issue with it is the mower deck stays on the ground, the lift rod will raise it but won't lock it raised. I've spent some amount of time trying to come up with diagrams showing what hooks to what, but all I can find is very generic non-detailed drawings. Suggestions appreciated! Thanks a lot. cYa, Jim
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,450 #2 Posted July 24, 2015 Welcome to the forum.1988 was the last year the 416-8 used a Kohler engine so a good chance your model number is 31-16K804.Parts list will show the lift partshttp://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/5026-tractor-1988-416-8-da-tiplpdf/Tractor operator manual in case you don't have ithttp://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/2666-tractor-1988-400-series-8-speed-om-wiringpdf/You can also bring up the parts lists here by entering the long model number.http://www.partstree.com/parts/The parts that are priced are still available from any Toro dealer.Garry
jimmacha 0 #3 Posted July 25, 2015 Thanks for the great date and model number info. This explains why I've had trouble getting this to make any sense. Now I know how this thing goes together and maybe can get the lift to latch when I pull the deck up.cYa Jim
Don1977 605 #4 Posted July 25, 2015 If the lift chain is adjusted too short the deck won't latch up.
jimmacha 0 #5 Posted July 28, 2015 Are these mower decks designed to run on the rollers and wheels when mowing, or suspended (like my newer Kubota)? I will check the chain length, that sounds like a good suggestion.
clip 185 #6 Posted July 28, 2015 (edited) Far as I know the rollers are only there to prevent scalping, the deck floats otherwise and rides only on the rear gauge wheels. Edited July 28, 2015 by clip
can whlvr 994 #7 Posted July 30, 2015 the deck is held by the mid attachamatic and rides on the rear wheels,as stated already the front rollers are for scalping, they don't touch the grass all the time
