516H ignition

Forgive the stupidity here. But, this is the first Horse I've owned or worked on. It is giving me fits with running. I have been through entire fuel system. Except fuel pump. It runs fine for a few minutes. Then, goes down hill fast. i have been leaning towards an ignition problem. Can anyone tell me. If, this model still has points and condensor? Or, if it has a module under the flywheel. And, if it has points. Are they under the flywheel also? It has the 16 horse Onan engine. And, ran perfect last week. Now. is another story. Thank you for any help or info anyone can provide.

It sounds to me like it is running out of fuel.
Pull the fuel line off at the carb  and hold it in a container while you crank the engine over.    If you get a good strong spurting of fuel, your fuel supply to the carb is OK.

Will it run if you feed fuel with a squirt bottle directly into the carb.   If it runs , then you have a carb problem.

Could be the float is sticking partially closed or there is a hole in the float.

It runs fine as long as the deck is not engaged. I can drive around uphill, downhill no problem. When deck is engaged for just a few minutes. It starts spitting and sputtering. And, will die at times. That's why I was leaning towards an ignition problem. Just had carb off and apart. Cleaned all passages and bowl. But, have not checked for fuel flow amount. Bowl was full when disassembled.

Can definitely use some of this info. Thanks. Threw in the towel for today. But, I have to get it figured out somehow. Way to much yard to use push mower on. I'm just stumped. I've never worked on an onan. And, its got me whipped at the moment.

If it runs fine with the PTO disengaged, You probably don't have a fuel problem.      If it only misses and stalls when you engage the PTO, I would look at the PTO, seat, and neutral  safety switches.
Maybe a loose or bare wire or a switch that is failing with the additional vibration of the deck.

I know I don't have a problem with the seat switch. It's been bypassed. The neutral safety switch, I have to push over with my finger to get it to start. But, have not checked on PTO switch. So, it is a possibility. Everybody has been giving me things to look at. Thanks a bunch. And, please feel free to keep the ideas coming. I will look into every one. Until I find the right one.

You guys are awesome. Thank you for all the ideas. Got that monster up and running. It was a combination of 2 things. PTO switch dirty and not working correctly. And, part major dork on my part. Put too much seafoam in not enough gas. . I will take my lumps for that any day. When it makes fixing that easy in the end.

Haha, im guilty of the seafoam thing before too.

Put a load of it in the tank then forgot to fill the tank back up. They dont run too well on straight seafoam. :eusa-doh::laughing-rollingyellow:
