36 Inch mower Deck Slide Block

Recommended Posts

Lane Ranger

The 36 Inch mower decks had a nylon slide and slide black that  the idler puller arm and spring ride on.   The nylon slide blacks have lasted well for 40 plus years.    No longer available thru Toro.     I have saved a few over the years when decks are disassembled and parts saved for reuse.    I am running out of the old saved parts.

I rebuilt two idlers today.  The four carriage bolts that hold the slide blocks down had outlived their use.  Rusty and they wobble in the deck so the idler starts to wobble and widen the hole in the nylon slide black.

Would like to see if anyone else has seen this problem and what you may be using for a replacement slide block !

10" x 15-1/2" x 2" Polypropylene, very similar to nylon but with better properties as listed below:

  • More chemical resistant
  • Weathers better
  • Stiffness is higher
  • Higher density

I don't have any pictures. I had a couple made by a friend with a milling machine out of nylon. The nylon i picked up at an old mill site I was measuring to draw up Handicapped Access. I was being divided up for other business. If the blocks haven't been turned around that works one time. I had used both side of mine.

If you could get some one to mill the slot across the piece shown above. Then you could saw them out and drill the holes. That piece is a little thick they are only around

Don:   I think that is what I am going to do next.  Make some but I  plan on using that polypropylene block  I  posted above in this thread.   I think that stuff will cut good on a milling machine and should be able to drill  holes like the original slide blacks had without too much difficulty.  The  older blacks  (35 to 40 years often are worn  wider making the idler bar and pulley operate irregular and they can damage the deck v belt more than need be.

It's been 8 or 10 years since I did mine. I could still get the bottom slides. I went and looked at the old ones. ( have a box of used parts) they are 1/2" high  3/4" wide and 2 1/8" long. That polypropylene should last longer.

Lane:
Are you talking about these parts?   (If so, we have these for only $6/set, includes thin metal washers for on top added reinforcement/life.)

Glen this is what we were talking about. Slides for the old Double-D decks. These are worn about 1/8" on each side of the slot.

Lane / Don:
Pictures are worth 1,000 words, now I know exactly what you two are talking about.
I have never seen those available . . . and you're right about the best way to make those.
