gear driven mower deck

Recommended Posts

HI guys! dropped a blade on a 2361 deck while mowing, reattached it but the spindle is not engaged to the gear,it  turns freely with the blade inside the gear when spinning the blade and the gear turns when spinning the other blade without engaging the spindle. What could have fallen off? The spindle cup did not come off, could something have sheared inside?  Bob

Woodruff key may have sheared off. Locks the spindle to the gear

I would say squonk is right the woodruff key is like a saftey so the gears don't break if you hit something while mowing

Isn't there an external snap ring that holds the spur gear to the shaft?

Pop off the cover. Remove the snap ring on top of gear. Pull the spindle down and out. Remove and replace the key. When reinstalling make sure blades are timed correctly ( 90 deg. From each other. Also make sure no shims or the needle brg washer didn't fall out. Replace the snap ring. Grease well. Oh I forgot, GET LOTS OF RAGS!!!!

Thanks guys ! It was the woodruff key, one of the needle bearings was bad also so i replaced it. The key won't  fit through the bearings and is put in the spindle/gear from the top side of the deck. :text-thankyoublue:
