JamesC-120 204 #1 Posted June 25, 2015 I bought a kohler k91 on ebay for $225 shipped to the house. I got it yesterday and when I opened the box it had a gear reduction unit on it. I know it has the wrong shaft if I take the gear reduction off. Should I rebuild the whole engine and put a different crank in it or should I return it?Thanks
AMC RULES 37,198 #2 Posted June 25, 2015 Depends on what you find once removed... might be able to find a crank shaft adapter to make it work.
Shynon 7,482 #3 Posted June 25, 2015 Pull it off and put a pulley on it, I have one on my RJ. Drive the set screw between the splines will lock in place fine. You will not be able to run attachments as the crank is only long enough to hold the pulley. Tom
JamesC-120 204 #4 Posted June 26, 2015 Shynon what size bore is the pulley you used? I took off the gear reduction and it has one of those spline shafts.
Racinbob 11,978 #5 Posted June 26, 2015 (edited) I'm replacing the crankshaft on m K91 but mine has a tapered shaft and the PO had welded a pulley on it. You should be able to get a splined pulley for yours. You'd need be sure you match the splines but I think it's do-able. Terry M-(Moderator) 2,239 #6 Posted June 26, 2015 James , On a gear reduction K91, does yours look more like a gear at the out put end of the crankshaft rather than a splined shaft?? Thats what I've seen on these GR k91's....and I think thats what SHYNON had and used a pulley that fit over the teeth of the gear like end with a set screw like he described above. Shynon 7,482 #7 Posted June 26, 2015 pulley has a one inch bore. see pictures of mine, see the set screw between the splines?
JamesC-120 204 #8 Posted June 27, 2015 (edited) I tried a 3/4in bore and a 1in bore but the 3/4 was to small and a 1in was really loose. Was yours really loose? I see that pulleys also come in 7/8in bore, that might work. Also what is the correct diameter for the pulley on an RJ-58? Brian01 481 #9 Posted June 27, 2015 Could it be an odd ball? Like 7/8? Dunno, just a thought
Terry M-(Moderator) 2,239 #10 Posted June 27, 2015 I measured one of the k91's I have with the gear reduction and the gear/or spline measured at 7/8". maybe their sized different for different applications..??James, If your k91 appears to still have the original paint, I'm curious what color it is ?? any pics along with a data plate?? JamesC-120 204 #11 Posted June 27, 2015 Ok so I will order a pulley with a 7/8" bore since that seems to be right. Now what should the outer diameter of the pulley be on an RJ-58? Here is the pictures and I believe it has original paint but not wheel horse red obviously.
Terry M-(Moderator) 2,239 #12 Posted June 28, 2015 Thanks James, I was thinking your engine would maybe be like mine...but your is a little different. My engine is off an ESKA snow blower from the 60's...and the "output gear on my engine is a 7/8 diameter ,but shorter and more like a gear. Thanks for posting the pic.
