wang49 0 #1 Posted June 24, 2015 What is the best way to replace the bearings in a spindle housing, I don't have a press I took the snap ring out tried hammering it out with a socket block of wood and a hammer no luck ?
mowerman1193 42 #2 Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) Welcome to RedSquare!!If I remember correctly I took the smaller snap rings out and removed the spindle shaft. Then I set the spindle on the top of my vise ( vise opened up enough to let the bearing slip through ). The I took a longer tapered punch and tapped around the bearing from the top side through the hole where the spindle shaft was.. hitting somewhat hard blows but not real hard and just move it around the area of the bearing so I don't get it jammed too crooked and mess it up.. No long punch? Maybe a long bolt or something would probably also work.. Once that one is out flip it over and do the same on the other end.. But do make sure you have the large snap rings out too.. LOLMine have always came out like that fairly easy.. Of coarse if your planning to re-use any of those bearings this method may not be the best since I am sure you will damage the bearing doing it like that.. I was planning to replace mine when I did that this way.. Edited June 24, 2015 by mowerman1193
daveoman1966 3,841 #3 Posted June 24, 2015 1) remove snap ring from bottom end of housing. 2) use a 6 or 8" long 3/8" socket extension and insert the hollow end about 3 inches into top end of spindle (long hex bolt works too) 3)whack that ext on the side to dislodge the internal sleeve4) with hand leverage on the square end of ext, force it as far as possible to one side to 'feel' the bearing edge 5)while holding the ext in place, smack with hammer to free the bearing from the housing....one side, then the other, until it drops out of the housing.6)with the bottom bearing out, reverse the ext and tap out the top bearing....gradually around the circumference. NEED PARTS....? ? ? ? I have lots of parts for spindles....36 42 or 48 in various styles. clik here for further details:daveoman@windstream.net
