JamesC-120 204 #29 Posted June 17, 2015 It worked amazing! I just cut a little slit for a screw driver in the end of the broken bolt and did the battery thing and it came right out! Thanks so much Garry! I am not worried about the broken off ear on the cast iron case. Here's the video. https://youtu.be/9eICuoKmLeQ
Racinbob 10,296 #30 Posted June 17, 2015 I gotta ask. Just why aren't you worried about the damaged case?
JamesC-120 204 #31 Posted June 17, 2015 (edited) Getting everything all cleaned up and ready for paint and hopefully order all the bearings and seals tomorrow. I have used some paints in the past but have not been impressed by the durability of it or the long lasting color. It looked kind of faded even just being out in the sun a few times here and there. It was very cheap paint but what do you recommend? Thanks Edited June 17, 2015 by JamesC-120
Racinbob 10,296 #32 Posted June 17, 2015 Rattle cans or gun? If you're going to use rattle cans Rustoleum Regal Red is the one most commonly used. Give it plenty of time between coats and even more time to fully cure but it will eventually be fairly durable.

I am not worried about the broken off ear on the cast iron case. Here's the video. https://youtu.be/9eICuoKmLeQ Glad it worked for you.I should add a word of caution. If the current is allowed to pass through a bearing it will effectively destroy the bearing in short order. If you want to try it on a seized hub on an axle connect to the hub and then the end of the axle. That way it can not affect the bearing. This procedure will also provide localized heat if you use a carbon rod for a contact probe. Years ago every auto mechanic had a small container in their tool boxes that contained carbon rods salvaged from spent zinc-carbon dry cell flashlight batteries. It works well if you don't want open flame to heat something. A nut seized to a bolt turns red hot while leaving the bolt cold plus it blows the rust out of the threads. A stubborn Philips head sheet metal screw is no match. It was often used on the screws in the headlamp retaining ring that holds the sealed beam in the pot.Well established welding suppliers have copper-coated carbon sticks intended for the carbon-arc torches used with stick welders for heating. Believe the last I got are 5/16" x about 6" long. The zinc-carbon dry cells are still made but have lost their popularity to alkaline batteries. An alternate power supply for this procedure is the common stick welder.Garry Edited June 17, 2015 by gwest_ca
JamesC-120 204 #34 Posted June 17, 2015 I am definitely going to use something more high quality that a spray paint can. So will probably have to use a gun to spray it. I have seen a lot of really nice looking tractors on here and wondered if there is a few common paints people use.
Racinbob 10,296 #35 Posted June 17, 2015 There's no question that using a gun is better but you'd be amazed at the quality of a rattle can job if done properly and conditions are just right. This Commando doesn't look like this anymore but it has held up better than I expected considering it's been used hard by my grandson. I'm sure a gun job with hardener would have held up better though.
stevasaurus 22,233 #36 Posted June 17, 2015 Thanks for the video...that is an excellent trick to remember. What are your plans to fix the casting?? I had one like that once and have some pictures of it if you are interested. The casting is weldable.
JamesC-120 204 #37 Posted June 17, 2015 I was planning on just leaving the casting since I will use RTV to seal up the case, I don't think it will cause any problems. It was not leaking before and it was broken off before I took it apart and it did not leak before.
Racinbob 10,296 #38 Posted June 17, 2015 I was thinking it was dry when you got it but maybe not. Of course you're gonna have to plug the hole in the side cover. That's a good bolt to remove to drain the case.

JamesC-120 204 #40 Posted June 25, 2015 Can someone tell me what the dimensions of the pulley for the engine on the RJ-58 with the Kohler? Also what should the dimensions of the the shaft be for it if it has a Kohler? Thanks
slammer302 2,154 #41 Posted June 25, 2015 i believe it should be 2 1/2'' pulley and a 3/4'' shaft size
JamesC-120 204 #42 Posted July 10, 2015 I got everything painted and ready to go(except a few small parts are not done yet). I just need 1 more coat of paint on the fenders and hood and we will be in good shape. Transmission is going back together tomorrow and a few other things. I got some amazing lug tires off ebay. They are Carlisle farm specialists 6-12 and the lugs are huge(1" tall). And they are quite thick at 6 ply. Also got some tri rib tires for the front. I ended up using rustoleum farm equipment paint in the quart can and bought some majic paint hardener and they work amazing together. The paint gets extremely hard in just 1 night. Here's a few pics!

MikesRJ 552 #46 Posted July 12, 2015 (edited) '62-'66 700 series tractor. Depends on a few additional details. Engine model and spec numbers (if original), which tranny, and a few other details. You really should start a separate thread and not hijack this one going off on a tangent. :) Edited July 12, 2015 by MikesRJ

Racinbob 10,296 #48 Posted July 14, 2015 (edited) It's no problem. Happens all the time. Just go to the home page and pick a category, in your case 'Wheel Horse Tractors'. Near the top is a start new topic button. Click that, give your topic a title and have at it. Edited July 14, 2015 by Racinbob
