ronscat 2 #1 Posted November 7, 2008 Well this is my 3rd post. I just picked up a C-160 8 speed today. It has on the id plate: Model - 1 0381 Serial - 118520 Just looking in the gallery I'm guessing it is a 1974 or '75. At any rate it is the first complete horse I have added to the herd. My other horses - one is now a stretched out garden tractor puller and the other came with no motor that now has a intek on it. It runs around the yard with my grandson grinning from ear to ear. If you can help with the year of this tractor I would appreciate your help. I intend to keep this one completely stock and mow grass with it. I have to get some tubes in the front tires and add a battery. Look forward to being on here more often as I get this stocker rolling. Thanks, Ron

ronscat 2 #5 Posted November 7, 2008 That was fast guys. 1975. I got a few pictures. Not up on how to put 'em on here. It needs some tlc (like anything would from 1975!). I picked it up sitting in the open hot Southern sun here in South Ga. I was told a Doctor bought it new and cut grass with it until last year. I could send someone a pic to their email address if you wanted to post it. Thanks for the welcome, Ron

ronscat 2 #9 Posted November 8, 2008 Thanks Mike. It has needs as can be seen. The seat needs new cushions - anyone got any sources for that? The deck roller is missing. Any ideas for that? I have the plate that covers the shifers. I do need the shifter knobs also. Any other recommendations you guys want to make please feel free to do so. I hope to get started with cleanup and repainting soon. Ron

And The shift knobs are still available at Jack's Small Engines - P/N 102871, but they're not cheap ($17 apiece!). May be cheaper from another source. It looks like the seat is NLA new but used can probably be found. Without knowing exactly which deck that is I'm not sure on the rollers, but I've seen a raft of 'em on eBay for various decks. Glad to have you aboard and will be interested on your progress rebuilding! Duff :hide:

ronscat 2 #12 Posted November 11, 2008 Just an update on my C-160. I have picked up a few items to get the tractor back to somewhat original. I gave it a good soaking with a heavy duty industrial cleaner (purple stuff) yesterday and again this morning and then have just power washed it. Looks somewhat like a tractor now. After the stuff dries this afternoon I intend to get out the sander and start on the hood and rear fender (I guess you guys call it a fender) where one sits anyway. If I can just add an aside to this post - it's funny to me when people ask what I am doing (including the wife) and I tell them I am working on my old tractor. I guess the fact that I am retired at 61 now gives them the idea that I have completely lost it. I feel sure all you guys know the "look" you get when you are working on your little garden tractor. Oh well, it gives me a purpose and "I" feel good about it - regardless of what other people might think although at this stage in life I really could care less what anyone thinks! Sorry to run on like this but just wanted everyone to know my feelings. Thanks, Ron
Teddy da Bear 11 #13 Posted November 11, 2008 Just to be an observer.... Those front tires look too small... I don't know about a "roller", but I do see and deck wheel missing off of the near side of the deck in the picture. All that really matters is that the tractor works to your satisfaction. nice tractor....
ronscat 2 #14 Posted November 11, 2008 Those aren't the wheels and tires that go with the tractor. Those wheels go on a 1968 Sears - just using them to roll the tractor with. I just had new tires put on the Wheel Horse rims yesterday (getting them dried off now to repaint the rims and then on they go.) I didn't know that was the wrong hood - it's the one that came with the tractor and is in pretty good shape. I will just use what I got I guess.
ronscat 2 #15 Posted November 11, 2008 Ok, nobody asked, but I will say since my last post above I have been pretty busy sanding everything I can reach (in tractor - not taking it down to the frame). I pulled the rear whatever you call it with the fenders attached off, sanded both sides, put a white primer on the bottom side and painted the bottom side with the Rustoleum regal red. I then went over the whole tractor except for the outside of the hood with the paint. I prepped the one side of the front wheels and painted them with some flat white paint I had setting around. I also sanded some brackets, primed them and they are now regal red too. I should add the underside of the hood is now the same color red. If I don't get any interruptions and the weather stays nice I should get everything painted tomorrow. I then have to get a can of Oops because I oversprayed some stuff! I hope to have the whole tractor done by Friday if the weather cooperates and no one wants my time for something. Will it be show quality? Read my first post. I intend to put it to work. Will it look better and make my wife feel better about me spending the money I am putting into it? Will I be want to ride it, or will one of the grandkids? I think the answer to the last two questions would be positive. I guess I should snap a few pics before it gets too late. That is all i intend to do to it today. Oh well, it gives me a purpose and "I" feel good about it - regardless of what other people might think although at this stage in life I really could care less what anyone thinks! Ron, my man, been there and done that for sure! You don't owe anyone any explanations or apologies - it's your machine, your life, and as we all know there are a whole lot of things we men can get into that are far less....positive....than working on our tractors! So have a blast and enjoy your machine to the max! And keep pictures coming! Duff :hide:
Brian1045 28 #17 Posted November 12, 2008 :hide: Ditto: On the reply above. My neighbors think I am a little crazy too. But I'll tell you this. I've just about done everything and seen everything I wanna see. Times are tough and everyone needs a hobby. I've always had a thing for lawn/garden tractors. These things are cheap to work on and be proud of. This hobby is a cheap way to bring back history whether it be childhood memories or whatever. Funny thing is that the neighbor that thinks I'm anal and crazy for being "into" garden tractors, is the same neighbor who all of a sudden wants to find him an ole Deere to restore to compete with me on. Addicted or not...I love this crap! :horseplay:
JimD 3,347 #18 Posted November 12, 2008 hi ron. i'm 57, have done two resto's, have two more waiting, work full time, and love the time i spend in the garage with my, "babies". frankly, i don't care what anyone thinks about it. i have a couple of friends that stop to see what i'm up to when they see the doors up. i work on them mostly in the summer cause i don't have heat out there. workin on it though. so get out there and just enjoy yourself using the tools and breathing some life back into your horse, cause as i've read many times before here, when you get the first one done, you'll find yourself with another project somehow. they just have a way of mutiplying. jim. ronscat 2 #19 Posted November 12, 2008 Thanks for the comments - bout being "misunderstood" working on these little tractors. My report today is that the hood and fender painting didn't go too well. We have a front moving in over our area. I tried to do the painting while overcast conditions prevail and that is how the painting turned out too.....kinda overcast!! I just shoved everthing under the shelter and will have to resand and respray the paint next week, or whenever I get time. Even though I intend it to be a worker I still want it to look fairly good. Well, I'm off to find some of that oops stuff. Wally World didn't have any after coffee time this AM. As someone above said - already got my eye on another 1975 Wheel Horse. Don't everyone need more horses in their stable?
