520 Snow Machine gets a few mods

Why do I work on snow blowers in the summer and mowers in the winter ?  :confusion-shrug:

 

Anyway..made a few mods to the blower today.

 

How many can you spot?

Bigger metal piece on the chute front

contorl and xtra control for the top of chute deflector

chute throat primed / or differant paint

center of auger in middle xtra steel reinforced

did you modify the chute turning control? Not sure,,,,,,,,,,,

Ok, I put the magnifying glass away. Good custom touch.

The chute deflector control was made from a throttle control off an old hand mower.

I know it's not Hi Tec, but I have in cab control of the chute rotation and deflector..and it works.

Here's the rubber pad on the auger Glenn. It closes the gap between the auger and the blower housing.

Also added wheel weights (50lb each) and rear weight (150 lb) and front chains. The rears were chained and loaded with washer fluid.

Changed blower drive pulley from 5" to 4" to increase auger RPM and make it possible to change blower belt w/o moving the pulley.

Motion foot control and heat collector are not new, but both worked well last winter. The cab stays 30F higher than outside temp.

We'll have to wait a few months to see how the new mods work.

Ed, thanks for the reply to me. Real nice, ingenious job. I also like using the holes in the belt guard to serve 2 purposes, good thinking on that to.

Well done I like what I see here! How well does the throttle cable for the deflector work? I would think the cable would bend before moving the chute? And I really like the idea of more auger rpms.

You are correct Paul. The cable did want to bend when pushing the wire out to lower the deflector. I reduced all friction on the deflector by loosening the lock nuts. If you look closely you'll see I actually turned them around putting the locking side on first so they would lock. It works fine now ,but with the force of the snow discharge pushing the deflector to the open up position, I may not be able to push it closed or down with the cable. In hindsite, I should make a new longer operating lever with the pivot in the center and pull with the cable to lower the deflector.

nice work on the snow machine, I was pretty excited a few weeks ago to get next year's plow truck already!  I know the feeling all too well, but I really should get the garden in before snow comes again...

I like the simplicity of this idea its got :wh: written all over it! I think your idea of reversing the motion is the way to go and then the only thing you may need to add is a way to quickly lock the adjustment lever in position, maybe a small plate with notches cutout? The force of the snow will keep the cable taught in the reverse setup but might be able to overcome the lever tension and still move the chute. I may have to borrow this idea Ed!! Hope you don't mind :)

 

I have thought about adding the rubber flaps to the auger multiple times so maybe its something ill get around to before this winter. Do you have any experience ever doing that before? Now that I cleaned up my blowers and got some fresh paint on the chutes I made I didn't have to many clogging issues, only with the really nasty wet stuff at the very end of the driveway a few times.

 

Did you put much thought into the smaller diameter pulley or just figure its something to try? Im wondering how much it will change the rpms and wondering more so how it will act when it starts to slow down from being loaded up with a lot of snow? O and by the way I have changed a few belts without removing that pulley, its takes some finagaling but it can be done :handgestures-thumbupright:

No patents on the deflector control Paul. If you put one  on, feel free to post a pic here.

 

Before I got the tall chute blower, I had three short chutes and put the rubber flap on one of them with the intention of comparing the with / without blowers.

When I got the tall chute, I sold the shortys before I had a chance to do the test.  My feeling is, closing the gap can only help.

 

I have found most engines , especially 2 stroke outboards have a sweet spot where the run and sound much happier. The 220 ONAN in my 520 seems to be much happier at 3000 than at 3600. So my blower is running about 20% slower than if I ran at WOT , and with the foot control, I am constantly adjusting the forward motion to match the conditions so my engine never bogs down.    Going from a 5" to 4" pulley will increase the blower RPM about 20%.  So I am roughly back to max blower RPM at a lower engine RPM . And yes at less power, But I don't see that being a problem with the foot control.
