doc724 925 #4 Posted May 10, 2015 Mine (314) leaks oil. More a nuisance than functional. I like my machines real clean!
muz123 1,192 #5 Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) What year is your 314? If it starts leaking oil what should i replace? Also about around what amount of hours it starts? Thanks, Dave Edited May 10, 2015 by muz123
Racinbob 11,753 #6 Posted May 11, 2015 I've got a 2005 and zero issues so far but it's still a puppy. Kohler claims the life on a Command is longer than a Magnum or K series. Personally, I question that based on extensive experience with the K's. Time will tell......maybe......I don't put near the hours on it like I used to. If Commands are prone to oil leaks I'm not too worried about it. Oil leaks can be fixed.
can whlvr 993 #7 Posted May 11, 2015 if it is properly maintained them y should get more than 2000 hours, ive heard of some k,s with 3-4 thousand,so a command should go 2000 and more
Racinbob 11,753 #8 Posted May 11, 2015 (edited) Dave, a lot of folks confuse the Commands with the Courage vertical series. The Courage motors were a definite problem child. Edited May 11, 2015 by Racinbob
muz123 1,192 #9 Posted May 11, 2015 (edited) Thanks ALOT guys, and yes i always to regular maintenance. Also thanks for telling me that a lot of folks get confused between the engines. On one of the topics on the forums one of the members said that the engine in the 07 315-8 was a ''Crap engine'' thats what got me confused. Racinbob 11,753 #10 Posted May 11, 2015 Then you can expect a very long life out of your Command. That's a motors best friend. Oh crud....I'd be using emoticons but they don't work on this tablet?????????

The 15hp Command is An OHV aluminum block cast iron cylinder EPA friendly version of the old K & later Magnum series. It has a pressure oil system as opposed to the old splash lube. Unfortunately some engines leak and others never do. Just comes down to dumb luck. Just treat it right and enjoy. bean 85 #13 Posted May 11, 2015 i had a kohler command 15hp in a previous mower . it developed a leak, but was just the valve cover gasket.
doc724 925 #14 Posted May 11, 2015 Mine has a bit over 400 hours on it. For the life of me, I cannot find the source of the leak (I need to put some UV tracer into the oil and then check), but is seems top be coming from the seal between the block and the engine cover plate on the drive side of the engine. It just weeps out, enough to cause a spot on the floor (or mower deck), but there is no measureable effect on the oil level. Kohler eliminated a real gasket for an RTV type seal in this location. US automakers went this way in the 80's and it was a disaster. Japanese automakers always used a nice (but more costly) molded seal. Never had a drop of oil on the garage floor form any of my Honda's. Unfortunately I could not say the same for GM cars
