mikeeyre74 289 #1 Posted May 5, 2015 My drive belt is super noisy when in neutral or just running around. When I push in the clutch, the belt goes slack and the noise stops. Is the fix just a belt replacement since there's no adjustment for belt tension on my 1977 B-80 gear drive?
stevasaurus 23,276 #2 Posted May 5, 2015 It's possible that your belt is stretched and that is your belt slap. Take off the guard and make sure all the little guides are there (might be 3). While you have the guard off, check that the engine mounting bolts are tight, your pulleys are good and no play in the trans input shaft.
MalMac 1,332 #3 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) Goes along with checking the pulleys, if the idler pulley gets wore bad it cause that belt to make all kinds of noise. Edited May 5, 2015 by MalMac
clip 185 #4 Posted May 5, 2015 I've noticed my idler is very noisy. Probably time to service the bearing.
mikeeyre74 289 #5 Posted May 24, 2015 As a follow up, I did pull the belt guard off the side and everything was nice and quiet after that. I'll be getting a replacement belt soon (82" belt I believe?) and I'll report back if that's the fix.
rmaynard 16,293 #6 Posted May 24, 2015 Sometimes a weak clutch return spring will add to the slapping of the belt.
mikeeyre74 289 #7 Posted June 3, 2015 I finally swapped this old belt out today with a new one. The old belt was so thin that, what was supposed to be a 5/8ths wide belt was narrowed dow to about a 1/2" wide belt. The whole thing is night and day different now, much to the better!
