I keep getting older...tractors that is!

This weekend, I picked up (what I think is) a mostly original 656! :)   The seat has obviously been replaced, the tires are not original, and had been repainted once or twice in its life time, with the foot rests and pedal being painted black, but it is a very straight machine! (has one dent in the hood, but that's about it)  It came with a slot hitch and the original owners manual, and the manuals for a 36" mower deck, 32" snow thrower, and a dozer blade, which did not come with the tractor :angry-tappingfoot: .  The previous owner said that he bought the tractor at an auction from the original owner, which is exciting!

The HH60 in the tractor, is being typical tecumseh-like, and is giving me problems.  :ychain:   It has given me a few putts, maybe so far a total of 15-20 seconds of run time.  So, it does run!  I haven't dug deep into it yet, but I do have a spark tester, and it seems as if the spark is very intermittent.  I've pulled it over probably a hundred times now, and my hand hurts.  :laughing-rofl: The sad thing is that the electric start on the tractor doesn't work (I even put the battery straight to the positive of the starter and got nothing) so I feel that it may have a few electrical gremlins that may have to be sorted out.  I've never dealt with points yet in my life, and I feel like it's going to be something I'm going to have to check, so wish me luck and anyone that has any tips or suggestions, please let me know, I highly appreciate it!  :bow-blue:

I have to ask, I know the 606 was a pull start tractor and the 656 is the electric start model, but did the 656 come with the pull start attached to use as a back up? Or was that added on by one of the previous owners at some time?  But all in all, I am really excited about this tractor.  I think I may use a mower deck with it this summer.  I have a 36" deck that should fit right under it, with no problem (as long as I get it running)!

656 did come with the pull start as a back up. Most like the Techy will need a set of points and condenser to run.

Ahh, okay, because I thought I saw a picture of one without a pull start, so it just had me wondering. And yeah, points and condenser I will most certainly check out! Thanks! Edited by stratostar250

Thanks Gary, I appreciate it! I'm going to try a few things, but if I get stumped, I will for sure send you a message.  And I picked it up thru an ad.  The person had it up for trade, and I like the look of it, so I gave them a call and asked what they would take cash for it, and it was a decent price, and I talked them down a little bit, and I was happy with it! So, here it is, now!

Tom I would start on an $20 e-bay carb. It is cheaper in the long run to buy new because of the $$$. I have the #`s let me know.

Yeah, I've heard that it is easier just to buy a new carb.  I feel like the carb that is on it is working alright though, I feel like I have more electrical problems than anything else, but I will keep it in mind.  If I decide to go that route I'll PM you for the #'s

Does anyone have any tips for me on this?  The pto pulley seems like it needs to be further in towards the motor on the output shaft.  The belt is hitting the belt guard.  Anybody have any suggestions on how to move it inwards? I found what seems to be a set screw, and it moves freely, but I couldn't get the pulley to budge.  I'm assuming a lot of pb blaster and some tapping? :tools-wrench:  or is that not the way to go about this, because I do not want to damage the engine by tapping the shaft too hard or something. Thanks for any advice!

Loosen set screw and tap in until it is straight. Should be almost all the way in.

I would get a pipe or something slightly bigger than the diameter of the crankshaft to use to drive the pulley in.. Tap the pipe so it pushes on the pulley near the crank. If you tap on the outer edge of the pulley you may damage it.

Never even thought of that! Thanks, good idea. I was thinking about grabbing my biggest socket and doing that, but I should try and find one that wont damage the outside of the pulley.

Well, after doing some work, I found out that the starter needed brushes, so I ordered them and installed them, and now the starter works great! :handgestures-thumbupright:   I also got the tractor running!  She is quite temperamental though (as you can see from the attached video) :? .  It doesn't like to stay running for all that very long, maybe a good minute at most, but it does restart with a little tinkering of the choke and throttle (or at least it did a few times) :confusion-scratchheadblue:  I gave up after the 5th or 6th time it sputtered out.  What a sweet little runner though!  But, I can't lie.  I really like the sound of the little techy! :hide:
