I bought the above mentioned tiller 2 years ago and used it last year.

Had quite a bit of trouble getting the v belt on.

As I tried to slide it around pulley on the tiller it would slip off one of the mid mount pulleys.

Even though I was able to use the tiller I've spent the better part of today trying to get it going with no luck.

I'm convinced it's too short.

Going to get it measured tomorrow and buy the correct length.

Can anyone tell me the correct length of belt I need for my set up?

Tiller came with the "inline" mid-mount pulley

Cheers,

John

Garry

That's awesome. Thanks so much.

And the service bulletin recommended a belt that is 2 inches longer which makes perfect sense

Cheers,

John

Spent all morning on the phone trying to locate 141" inch v Belt with no luck.

Really want to avoid the expense of going through local Toro guy.

Does anyone know of a national auto parts supply outfit that either has or can easily get

a belt this big.

I bought the WheelHorse belt and never looked back. It's a quality belt that should be the last one you ever buy for it. Pricey? Yes. But it's worth it .

I recall the belt is either 141 or 141.5 inches.  To get the belt on, raise the tiller with the lift lever, then put the belt on the tiller pulley and rear idler.  Then put it on the PTO.  Now, pull on the mid idler lever to put the spring in tension and then you can get it under the idler pulley.

Had my old belt measured this morning and it came in at 138"Outside Diameter.  No wonder it didn't fit.

So after literally 2 years of searching I've located one @ $30.00 for a 142"OD.

I'm a big fan of "you get what you pay for" but local Toro guys are charging almost $130.00.

Think I'm going to take the chance on the after market belt first.

There is a Gates 6652BR 1/2"x139-5/8" in the Blade Runner series of belts. Have a Napa dealer near you? We have an Ideal Suppy that is a Napa dealer and they carry Gates belts. Not cheap but way better than Toro here also.

Garry - about 3 hours north of you.

Garry, ya I tried NAPA with no luck but must admit I didn't have "blade runner" series to ask for.

I know there was a thread about this last year, I think, so I knew to check that item number.

Checked local Gates distrib. even called gates but they won't sell to public.

I'll let everyone know how this works out, especially since the belt is technically too long.

Wow! I wouldn't pay that either! Mine was 64.00 three years ago from my local dealer.

I am really frustrated now.

So the belt that measures 138" doesn't fit although it has been persuaded in the past  -  Photo 1

The belt that measures 140" {Gates Hi Power V belt 9002-2140} just flops off the mid-mount pulley.  Photo 2

In fact it comes off if I just spin the tiller pulley by hand.

I'm thinking it has got to be my set-up so I've attached photos and am hoping someone can get me back to work

That Gates A140 is likely 142". Industrial belts are measured differently. A B140 belt would be 143"..

Arggggggggghhhhh.

If these guys are getting Gates belts I'll see if I can return the A140 and get the Gates 6652BR 1/2"x139-5/8"

This is killing me

Looking at photo 1 , I think if you use a smaller flat idler you would be ok. What size is the rear pulley?Tractor supply sells the 2" pulley I believe it's around 8-10 dollars. Once you get it ,make sure to check the belt tracking.

Funny you should mention belt tracking.

I just happen to have a photo trying to show what my concern.

As the belt comes off the pto and runs down to the smaller flat pulley it isn't in alignment with the larger v pulley on the the mid mount.

It appears to me that the mid mount pulley and pto are not in alignment.

Are they supposed to be?  As soon as I engage the pto the Gates A140 belt immediately comes off the smaller flat pulley.

I'm picking up the Gates 6652BR 1/2"x139-5/8" Monday.  We'll see if it is still a belt length issue then I suppose.

Looking at that picture I would get a longer bolt and shim the back pulley out with washers so the belt tracks in the middle of the flat idler. Also, make sure your axle bracket for the tiller is centered.

Got the gates belt (139 5/8") today and it looks like it cost me $40 to learn that 138" is longer than 139 5/8". Am incredibly frustrated.

Especially since 140" is actually 142". Have no clue where to go from here. But I do know I don't want to learn anymore about lawn and garden belts. Anybody want to buy a Rototiller???

Please don't give up. What size is the flat idler? I would go back to the original belt that you started with. Make sure that the tiller is centered correctly, check the tiller flat idler to be sure that the bracket is not bent out of alignment. Then move up to the mid mount pulleys and change the back pulley to a smaller one. It will do two things, let you use the shorter belt and creat separation between the belt itself. It appears that the belt in the one photo is almost rubbing on the v groove pulley as it returns on the flat idler. That flat idler appears to be too large to me but without knowing the diameter it could just be the picture.

Looking at your first picture it seems that the tension arm would hit the bracket in front of it. That may be why the belt comes off too. Just trying to give you some help looking at it from a different perspective.

Rich, thanks for hangin' in there with me.

I'll check that the axle bracket is aligned properly. I hadn't thought of that.

I'll also inspect the tiller flat idler.

Also the flat idler on the mid mount is 3 inches across.

I've found the part number (for the flat idler) and looked it up online but can't seem to get a dimension.

And yes the belt definitely rubs together as it passes through the mid mount which obviously isn't right.

And yes the tension arm hits the bracket in front of it.

Also I've always felt that the arm of the mid-mount - that part that attaches underneath the tractor - isn't long enough.

The belt is not in alignment as it passes from the mid mount up to the pto and back.

That flat idler should be 2 1/2" . I actually have a 2 on mine because I did not know the size either. The original is 2 1/2" but I would consider 2" . Whichever will work with your belt. Choice will be yours. Tractor supply should have them, you may have another source.I thought that pulley looked to big.

The length of that 3/4" bar should be close to 10 1/4" measured from the inside of the arm it's welded to.The front v belt pulley can be 4" to 4 1/2" I believe.

ok. great.

I'll see if I can't run down that flat idler this week and I'll measure the bar on the midmount.

The guides on the bar don't appear to have been altered since they left the factory
