312hoss 0 #1 Posted April 27, 2015 Hello RS members, I have a 1988 310, that will not start by the key. I can jump the solenoid and it starts, but if I turn the key off it still continues to run. I am not an electrical whiz but I think the ignition switch may have gone bad. Any thing else I should check? Thanks for any ideas.
rmaynard 16,211 #2 Posted April 27, 2015 Sure sounds to me like a fried ignition switch. The old part number was 111215 but has been replaced with 103991.

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #6 Posted April 30, 2015 How are you jumping the solenoid? Battery cable to small terminal on the solenoid? or Battery cable to starter cable? Power for the starter solenoid goes from the ignition switch to 1/2 of the pto switch. Pto OFF power goes to the clutch pedal switch. Pedal down power is sent to the low oil relay. If oil level is ok power is sent to the small terminal on the solenoid. Starter should work. Wiring diagram is in part 3 of this manual Garry
312hoss 0 #7 Posted April 30, 2015 Can I jump the clutch switch or the low oil switch?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #8 Posted April 30, 2015 Here is a good write up on the low oil switch You should have a low oil light. It the test switch activates the light the low oil switch should not be the problem because low oil switch would activate it also. If there is a connector on the wires just disconnect it and then the low oil switch can't activate the relay. You can jump the clutch switch for testing purposes. 312hoss 0 #9 Posted May 5, 2015 Ok members, I got her to start today, found a wire loose on the pto switch. It still has one issue, I can not shut the motor off by using the key. It did this with the old ignition switch also, any ideas? Thanks, Bill
pfrederi 18,566 #10 Posted May 7, 2015 Shutting it off requires grounding the magneto ignition. The switch grounds the wire from the mag. So either your ignition switch body is not adequately grounded or there is a open in the wire coming from the mag to the switch. How are you shutting it off now??h circuit
312hoss 0 #11 Posted May 8, 2015 I turn the key off and pull the choke out.
pfrederi 18,566 #12 Posted May 9, 2015 If it runs with the key off you have a fault in the wire/switch that grounds the magneto. Start at the switch, unplug the wires and find the M terminal. Use your multi meter to see if there is continuity to a know good ground. If there is then the problem is in th wire from the mag to th switch (or in the plug it self that goes on the key switch.
