520 shuts off when battery is disconnected

Recommended Posts

I have a 520H,  I installed a new battery the other day.  The tractor starts and runs fine,  but if I disconnect the battery while the tractor is running,  the engine shuts right down.

Is this normal ?   I never noticed this before ,  no fuses are blown.  I haven't checked voltage outputs yet.  Just wanted to get an opinion first on what might be bad or if this is normal.

Thank you

Save Old Iron

The 520 with an Onan will have an electronic ignition module firing the coil. Without the smoothing effects of the battery, pulsating DC output from the RR unit might not bother a points based engine but I strongly suspect it will not be well liked by an electronic ignition system.

For one, never unhook the battery while running. Next check battery voltage while running before you decide there is a problem.

Most 300/400/520's have a warning label right next to the battery.

Hope you have not damaged anything.

Thank you for the info....the battery was disconnected and it shut down instantly..no wires touched anything other then the battery terminal.....I always thought it would stay running without the battery as long as the wires never touched anything.   Nothing seems wrong with it as of now....My tractor doesn't have a warning label near the battery....

When you disconnect the battery it causes a spike in the electrical system and can damage to components
