19richie66 17,624 #1 Posted April 6, 2015 Just wondering if anyone has done this. Having an oil filter cant be a bad thing.I have the oil filter mount and engine plate with hose adapters. I thought about running an oil pressure guage also. Anyone?
dcrage 630 #2 Posted April 6, 2015 Well 'Horse Fixer' did it on his 520-H rebuild a couple of years ago (documented in his normal exquisite detail on here) -- I would think that would be a good starting point -- Not sure if there are any significant differences due to you having an 18 horse Kohler Magnum vs the 20 horse Onan
bmsgaffer 2,053 #3 Posted April 6, 2015 I plan on that for my 520H. I also have all the parts, just have to finish the tractor!
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #4 Posted April 6, 2015 It would be a good thing for the Series 2 KT-17's as well. I just don't know where to plumb in the pressure and return lines.
19richie66 17,624 #5 Posted April 6, 2015 I am putting the same setup on my 20 magnum in the rat but I have wide open options on where to mount it. In the 418, I was thinking about making a plate and mounting it in front of the motor behind the grille. Not a lot of room on these things with a twin in it. Just was looking for ideas. JackC 617 #6 Posted April 6, 2015 I have all the parts but have not gotten around to it. The Kohler twins are near bullet proof and if you change the oil often the upgrade may not be that important. The ONAN P Series engines on the other hand would benefit from a remote oil filter with cover for the oil filter opening, oil pressure gauge and oil temperature gauge with alarm. The ONAN P Series engines overheat and destroy themselves a lot easier than the Kohler K and M Series. Never heard that happen to a Kohler. The only dead Kohlers I have seen are ones run low on oil. An oil pressure gauge would be easy to add. Some brands also use oil coolers. Heat dissipation is important for long life especially for an air cooled engine. My Buick Roadmaster has an oil cooler for the engine and for the transmission.
smoreau 658 #7 Posted April 6, 2015 Magnum twins came with a filter setup that can be added to any KT17. You can find them on flebay all the time. When I put a magnum 18 on my loader tractor it came with a filter assembly and I mounted it to the back engine tin between the head and blower housing. Very tight fit with that big twin in the way. I have 35 hours on it and one oil change. With out a filter band wrench it was not easy to get the filter off. I have one, just not at home when I got the edge to change it this winter. The magnum engine also has a port to fit the low oil pressure switch for the idiot light. It all works great and so far have been very happy with the set up. Oil pressure gauge will work on any Kohler K seriese twin or magnum twin, I do recommend that you go with a electric oil pressure gauge instead of the one with a plastic or copper tube feeding the gauge. They may be more accurate, but the issue with a leak that you can't see poring the oil on the ground while mowing would not take long to empty the crankcase and make a good day not so good. I can't seem to locate it.
dcrage 630 #10 Posted April 7, 2015 And I think this is Duke's rebuild topic where he added the oil filter
