WH nut 553 #1 Posted April 2, 2015 Is it possible for the coil to go dead on one side. I got the 520 out of the shed today and fired it up but it was only running on 1 cylinder. Checked spark and one side was dead. moved wires and both cylinders fire, but only from one side of the coil. other side has no spark
ericj 1,579 #2 Posted April 2, 2015 i had a coil on my latest 520 go week when starting cold, start ok hot but had to crank and crank to get it to fire cold, so i would guess anything is possible ohm the coil and see what you get. check the onan service manual for the specs. eric j
WH nut 553 #3 Posted April 2, 2015 I haven't ohmed it yet but I did check the manual. From what Im seeing I can understand it getting weak but not losing one side. The diagram looks like all or none.
ericj 1,579 #4 Posted April 2, 2015 i'm sure we've never seen things that shouldn't happen but some how managed to do so pm martin and find out more info on the harley coil if you don't have access to a used onan coil. think some were i remember a price of around $ 30.00 which is a lot less then a new onan. you need to make sure your replacement coil fires both side at the same time. good luck and keep us posted on progress eric j
WH nut 553 #5 Posted April 2, 2015 Will do. Will probably check with Kelly first since he is right up the road.
ericj 1,579 #6 Posted April 2, 2015 did you look down into the tower or hole that won't fire at least just to see what you can see if anything. not sure how the primary and secondaries are wired on the coils bit sounds like you might have a broken connection to the terminal not sure if it would be repairable but s o i might be able to help there. i was going to suggest kelly or one of the other vendors on her to see what they might have eric j
Theroundhousernr 590 #7 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) Could be a weak connection in the plug wire. Had one act similar and the last time I pulled the wire to ohm coil , the wire pulled out of the crimp connector. Oops, never mind just seen you switched plug wires. 312Hydro 474 #8 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) The same thing had happened to me. Fortunately I had seen Martin's post and ordered the exact coil on eBay.Has been working great ever since. I only had to make a bracket for the coil and was able to locate it so the original wires could be used. I did take the front wire out of the clip in order to get the extra length. Used one factory hole on the Onan and drilled one for a self tapping screw. Looks and works great and my thanks to Martin for saving me a lot of money.
