Quick Question

What is the cable for on my 312-8 ? It pass's below the seat through a short tube, it has a " U" shaped coupler on one end as I remember it? I have a tiller, mower deck and snow blower. None of these use this cable ,...at least I don't think the tiller is supposed to use it?  Anyway thanks for the info that I know will come. Jeff

The cable should hook to a rock shaft under the rear fender. Then a chain from the shaft to the tiller.

I am not sure about your 312-8, but on the older horses, one end of the cable hooks on to the lift lever...the "U" shaped end hooks onto the slot hitch and lifts and lowers the slot hitch for attachments like a plow, trailer, lawn roller..etc.  :)

yea I think it goes to something I don't own? Like grader blade or plow or something. One end is connected to "the slotted lift bar?" I will call it but the other end I just have run off to a hole in the frame just to keep it up out of the way. The chain yes that goes to the tiller I use that whenever I use the tiller which is not very often.

I do have one more " what is it question" how about the " dial a height wheel" ? I have been told it affects the use of a grader blade and I think,... if I recall it will affect the depth a little of the tiller but what is it really for? Like micro adjustments for a blade?

It is to allow for incremental heights in your attachments -- Otherwise you can have your tiller, blade (front or mid mount), blower, turning plow, deck (although people who know more than me say you shouldn't use the "Dial-a-height" for mowing; I still do it all the time) all the way up in the transport position or all the way down -- The "Dial-a height" gives you levels in between -- Easiest example to think of is snow blades and snow blowers -- With the "Dial-a-height" you can lift (set) them slightly off of the ground and not gouge your driveway

Ok so it can affect the blower. and the mower as well? I did not know that. I know a few years ago I mounted my tiller and went out to the garden. Try as I might I could not get the tines to go more than a couple of inch's deep. I crawled over that thing for an hour adjusting anything that I thought would help. Finally I noticed that I had about 4" of threaded rod sticking up above the dial a height wheel. When I started turning the wheel counter clockwise the tiller started to lower. I was pretty happy about that I can tell you.

I never thought much happened when mowing and using the dial though. The Blower though now I never even considered that might be affected . The manual is not to clear as I remember, on how this wheel works. I bet that has something to do with the fact that some years I cannot get the Blower to " carry" very high up off the ground. I do have the lift tube shimmed for maximum lift so that is not the issue. I think right now the blower will raise up about 3-4 inches. Thanks for the help Jeff

I don't know how effective it is for mowing. But for keeping my grader at a set height it was wonderful. I do miss my 8 speed.. The hydros have up and down. Try as you may you'll never get the same height twice w a hydro.

As I said earlier you aren't supposed to use the Dial-a-height for mowing. I think it was TT (and he would know) that said using the Dial-a-height will screw up your deck level. The stuff I cut I don't care about the cut quality. I do care about the incremental higher grass/weed height I have after cutting
