whtractors24 3,361 #1 Posted March 17, 2015 Just bought my 1st house in ct. I have owned alot of wheel horses blnow that I have a 1/2 acre to mow i am unsure of what to buy to mow it with? I am in the market for a wheel horse I would think a 42 or 48 inch deck if anyone has a lead on 1. I want something clean any suggestions would be helpful . Only issue is there isn't much for sale out there .

bmsgaffer 2,053 #5 Posted March 17, 2015 Congrats on the new house! I have 0.5 acre and I mow with this: (sorry for the dark photo) 36" walk behind hydrostatic mower. It gets me exercise and I can cut the whole yard in ~30 minutes vs 45 with the 42" wheel horse vs 2.5 hrs with a push mower. (There's really steep section I have to mow side to side) And it has a higher blade tip speed than the wheel horse for a faster cut with better mulching of the grass. I would highly recommend it if you have anything to mow around in your new yard like trees and such. It is more nimble than my 21" push mower. That said, I still love WH and I will always have a tractor along with the walk behind. I mowed with the WH all of last summer as I was doing upgrades to the walk behind, but I mostly like to used the horse for pulling a trailer, sweeping the lawn, plowing snow and any other heavy duty tasks like those. (It was nice to ride instead of walk, but I felt way more out of shape )
squonk 43,752 #6 Posted March 17, 2015 Simple. A C series tractor and if you have lots of trees and obstacles a Hydro.

muz123 1,192 #10 Posted March 18, 2015 (edited) I'd say a 312-8 or an 312-H with a 42 inch deck and a plow and chains would work out fine too. Edited March 18, 2015 by muz123
clip 185 #11 Posted March 19, 2015 I rent .44 ac currently and could push it with a 20" mulching push mower in about an hour. Then got a Cub Cadet 1042 (42", hydrostatic) and could mow it and half the neighbor's yard (figure .7 ac total) that never gets cut in about an hour. Then I got the GT1600, 42" deck and 8 speed, and plan on mowing with it this year. I mulched leaves with it last fall and was amazed at how much smoother it runs/drives/steers/cuts and has a lot less vibration. Looking forward to it this season.
