Hey i have just acquired a 1962 553 and i am planning on using it to tow a trailer with mulch. it drives good but doesn't have much click into the gears that the spring and balls are supposed to do. Also sometimes if it doesnt go into a gear i have to slide it to the gear across and back over to the gear i selected. I want to know if it is up to the test or if in can rebuild/replace worn parts.

Without actually feeling it it's hard to say if there's a problem.  You should feel the detents when you put it in gear. Are you having any issues with it? Maybe a good flushing and fresh oil would be a good idea for starters. Sometimes the gears don't mesh perfectly but that's just the nature of them. If you do need to tear into it don't fret over it. They are really quite simple and you'll find plenty of help here. Check out the videos Stevasaurus posted. They are outstanding.

Bob is totally correct...it does not sound like you have a problem.  As long as the transmission input pulley comes to a complete stop before you shift (which may indicate a worn belt if it does not) it is quite normal that the gears do not line up and you have to do what you are doing...or rock the horse.    If the trans does not pop out of gear when driving it around, the detente balls and spring are OK.  In a 50+ year old tranny, they may have a little wear, but unless you are having an issue...it is not worth opening up.  Like Bob said, I would drain the oil and flush (if it looks like water is in there) or (if the oil looks OK) just re-fill with 90wt or 80/90 wt.  Approximately 3 pts.  Your transmission is a Wheel Horse # 5025.  BTW...a 553 is a 1963 horse.  I know...I have seen the 62-***** on 1963 horses model number...unless Gerry comes in here and says different.     How about a couple of pictures?  Let us know what you find.
