papasan1 4 #1 Posted February 23, 2015 Was lifting fine last 3days. An hour in today it won't lift past one inch. The shaft on the cylinder is moving full range but only starts to lift at the end. What happened? Thanks
Ed Kennell 40,589 #2 Posted February 23, 2015 Is there a shear pin in the cross shaft?
papasan1 4 #3 Posted February 23, 2015 Not that I can see.
Kelly 1,030 #4 Posted February 23, 2015 there is square key in the shaft, never seen one shear, you may have a broken arm on the rockshaft where your attachment is hooked
papasan1 4 #5 Posted February 23, 2015 Everything looks OK to me, it just doesn't start to lift until the very end. It's as if something has slipped out of position. I don't know what it could be. I might be in over my head. Thanks .
Ed Kennell 40,589 #6 Posted February 23, 2015 Could that key have worked out Kelly ?
cheesegrader 433 #7 Posted February 23, 2015 (edited) What are you lifting? Sounds like it is able to lift, but late in the cycle. If the key comes out, or the rockshaft broke, it would not lift at all. Bent arm on rockshaft? Eyebolt slipped down the truniion? Pulled open a link in the lift chain, or pulled apart the attachment to the implement? Edited February 23, 2015 by cheesegrader
papasan1 4 #8 Posted February 23, 2015 Thanks for additional suggestions, I will try those asap. I'm lifting a 42" snowthrower.
squonk 42,628 #9 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) I'll bet you have a broken rockshaft. Have you been trying to bust through deep piles with that blower? We had a rash of broken rock shafts last year. Edited February 24, 2015 by squonk
papasan1 4 #10 Posted February 24, 2015 Which one is the rockshaft? I can't locate it in the parts manual. Thanks
squonk 42,628 #11 Posted February 24, 2015 It's the main lift arm. Sits right below and.in front of the hood stand. It has 2 arms on it and your lift cylinder hooks to it along with your snowblower lift flag. It could be broken and instead of pivoting on the bushings it's lifting out of it's mounting instead of lifting the blower
papasan1 4 #12 Posted February 24, 2015 I am going to get back on it tomorrow. Thanks so much.
papasan1 4 #13 Posted February 24, 2015 I'm looking at the 500 series parts and service manual, page 20, figure 7-3 hydraulic lift linkage. Is the rock shaft one of those? Thanks

WH nut 553 #15 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) I'll bet you have a broken rockshaft. Have you been trying to bust through deep piles with that blower? We had a rash of broken rock shafts last year. Copy that, split mine last year with the blower on Edited February 24, 2015 by WH nut
papasan1 4 #16 Posted February 24, 2015 Shaft looks whole, are we talking about it being broken on the inside? When the piston is in the fully up position, the shaft connected to the blower will raise another five inches up by hand. Again I don't see anything broken. Thanks
WH nut 553 #17 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Looks like item 7 PN 106218 bell crank or item 6 1/4 key PN1121 Im looking on section 7 page 20 for 88-89 520. not sure what year yours is but gives you the right idea Looks like same part # for all 3/4/500 series Edited February 24, 2015 by WH nut
papasan1 4 #18 Posted February 24, 2015 Just to make sure I understand, this an inside break not anything visible. Mine is 1989 so I assume I can locate a part and figure out how to replace it. Thanks
papasan1 4 #19 Posted February 24, 2015 By the way, any idea where I can locate these parts?
WH nut 553 #20 Posted February 24, 2015 The key could be sheared off, or the bell crank could be cracked. Pull the side panel off and the left side and watch the bell crank as you lift. If everything moves as one then it should be ok. Parts the keys is just a 1/4 straight key/ Bell crank looks like one off any 3/4/500 series tractor
oldredrider 2,553 #21 Posted February 24, 2015 I've got the bell crank and key. If you need it, send me a PM.
papasan1 4 #22 Posted February 24, 2015 Oldredrider, how do I send you a pm? Thanks
papasan1 4 #23 Posted February 24, 2015 I was able to remove the pins from around the bellcrank and remove the shear pin. It was not broken so must be the bellcrank. Anyone know a tutorial for replacing it? Thanks
Callen 64 #24 Posted February 25, 2015 Make sure your hood stand is tight and not moving when the lifting motion occurs.
ericj 1,578 #25 Posted February 25, 2015 dumb question did you check everything with the blower to make sure the problem wasn't there, lift tube, flag and such, just saying don't over think things without checking the simple things first .i never had a bell crank break so i can't say for sure but i would think that you should see something broken if the bell crank did in fact break, good luck eric j
