Poor BLUE Wheelhorse & possible a 1971 800 Special.

I was looking for some parts for my WH C161 so I stopped at a lawn tractor shop I saw out in the country near my deer hunting pasture that had a small field full of tractors.  It had mostly 10+yr old big box tractors but not much old stuff. there were a few tractors across a fence away from all the others near an old barn. There was a blue tractor and I asked if I could go look it over since I had worked at a FORD tractor shop in my high school years.

To my surprise it was an older Wheelhorse that had been painted Blue!  :scared-ghostface:

There was also what I suspect is a 1971 Wheelhorse 800 Special in a fairly weathered condition. :deadhorse:

Can anyone tell me what model-year and engine this "Blue Wh is?

I didn't find a model number plate but on the shift pattern decal it has Serial No. 30637 or 36637 it is a 3 speed transaxle.  it has a belt driven hydraulic pump below the dash located in the area between the drivers feet.  The front is a heavy cast aluminum piece. Also does the sides of the seat pan look original or has someone cut them back to fit bigger tires on it. there are no tins on the engine, Is it an old Briggs?

Am I correct that the pictures below are a 1971 Wheelhorse 800 Special.

Is the engine also a Briggs?

I really need to finish my C162 before I think of getting another tractor.   He wants $175 for the Blue Wheelhorse that also has a deck, and $75 for the 800 Special.

However while neither one of these is in very good condition, is there anything unique about either one of these tractors that I should consider bargaining for a better price and storing it in my barn for a while? or picking it up for a future parts tractor?

Blue one most likely a 953 and might be worth dealing on.  Personally I would leave the 800 Special where it is.

That was advertised before and I kept  a photo of it  from earlier last year !

I agree with ol550  the first picture shows what may be a Ross steering gear  (wide tube) and that means it's a 1963   953!

Unless you need parts from the 953 I'd leave that one there as well as the 800. It needs tons of TLC and in this case that stands for TONS OF LOOT AND CASH... :hide:

Blue one looks to be as said a 953 BUT looks to have a small Kohler with the updraft carb like a 633 would have, it should have a 10hp Kohler with a starter/Gen. on it, as for what it's worth? I see a couple hundred in parts, but looks to far gone to restore unless you want a money pit, I'd offer $100 if it was close to me but I part lots of tractors out, the 800 is ruff, about a $25 machine

953 nut

:text-coolphotos:   I have seen that 953 on Ebay a couple of times, Too far away from me or I would be interested. Is that a snow plow on the front of the 800? It would be great to get it running as is and throw an old Indian blanket on it as a seat to use as a driver at the shows you attend.

Ya know if you could mount a seat on it and get it running that actually would be a pretty good idea with the 800. Perfect tractor too haul fire wood with to!
