Live4outdoors 151 #1 Posted February 1, 2015 Father-in-law called me about this one down the road today and went and made an offer and home she came! I think it's a 753 but, the belt cover is smooth and no sticker detent and the decals look original yet not right for a 753, I'm not familiar with the difference in the 62s but it does have the two piece tank and sure that's either 62 or 63 as the only two years for them. Anyway any help would be great, nice little garage find, use to be the grandkids tractor show run around. SN 32713
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #2 Posted February 1, 2015 I would say its a 753 with the incorrect belt guard as it has the newer steering, 3 spoke steering wheel, and 2 piece tank.

zanepetty 117 #5 Posted February 1, 2015 Yes that's a 753 with maybe a 701 or similar belt guaRd . Looks great though. Does it run good? Are you going to do a restore?
Sparky-(Admin) 23,139 #6 Posted February 2, 2015 Don't bounce up and down on that seat!! Nice find! Mike.......
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,454 #7 Posted February 2, 2015 32713 certainly looks like a 753 serial number. Falls in batch 10 of 15 batches built so far. Garry
Live4outdoors 151 #8 Posted February 2, 2015 Thanks for confirming my thoughts everyone. That's what I bought it as, not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, undecided. Ran when parked, has great compression, I think it will fire with a little points cleaning and some fuel.... Don't bounce up and down on that seat!! Nice find! Mike....... Don't you think that was a nice weld job....LOL
Live4outdoors 151 #9 Posted February 2, 2015 With a little further looking, i found with electric start and Kohler and two piece tank it has to be 753 or 854, so went to the engine tag and it's missing, is there any obvious way from the outside of the engine you can tell a k161 from a k181 or is it all in the bore? Just trying to nail down for sure what this is.
Live4outdoors 151 #10 Posted February 2, 2015 One more interesting fact is...the belt guard over the starter belt was not there, yet now looking through pics the 854 doesnt seem to have that piece, or maybe a lot out there are missing that part too, just though maybe coincidence or not? zanepetty 117 #11 Posted February 2, 2015 854s are supposed to have the belt guard as well. As for IDing the engine, I'm pretty sure both the k161 and k181 look exactly the same externally. I'm sure someone here will know for sure though.
slammer302 2,156 #12 Posted February 2, 2015 You would have to check the bore they are the same externally the only thing I've noticed is most 8hp Kohlers have a thicker air filter than 7hp but on the round hoods they may have used the smaller air filters on both
rustyoldjunk 127 #13 Posted February 2, 2015 The K181 does have the deeper air cleaner and the hood is an inch longer on the 854's to accommodate it.
AMC RULES 37,196 #14 Posted February 2, 2015 Nice score either way.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,527 #15 Posted February 2, 2015 TT knows the difference. He told me before. I think it has something to do with the head (fins or bolts different). I replaced my 7hp on my 701 with a replacement 8hp. Nobody knows the difference... (until now)
new2horses 287 #16 Posted February 2, 2015 Look at the exhaust port, if there are no fins cast into the block it is a 7HP if finned it is an 8 HP. Surest way I know.
WheelHorse79 271 #17 Posted February 2, 2015 Unless I missed it in the picture, the hood doesn't seem to have the "rolled edge" that my 854 has. So, if that is the original hood, then it does sound like this is a 753 and not an 854. Hopefully more clues will surface.
Live4outdoors 151 #18 Posted February 2, 2015 This is why I love this site, the announcement for the new girl is a 753, she hasn't any fins at the exhaust port and I compared her to the 876 in the shed which has obvious thick fins. Thank you so much everyone! Now to decide what to do with her?!?
