rmaynard 16,291 #1 Posted January 20, 2015 When I pulled the 416-H apart a couple weeks ago to remove the hood stand and clean off all the oil and grass, I found an O-ring laying on the floor. It appeared to have a 3/4" ID. So I searched the 416-H parts pages and came up with all the O-rings on the tractor. There were four listed. Two in the hydro which I hadn't disassembled, and one on the engine in the breather assemble. That was too big. So the only one left was on the steering shaft. What in the world is this o-ring's purpose on the steering shaft? I see it listed on all the 300/400/500 series machines.
buckrancher 2,694 #2 Posted January 20, 2015 Bob why I am I not seeing the locking collar on the steering shaft? Oh I see their using a roll pin
rmaynard 16,291 #3 Posted January 20, 2015 This shaft has about 8 shims between the pin and the bushing, and another 7 just sitting at the bottom on top of the gear.
rmaynard 16,291 #4 Posted January 20, 2015 I'm rebuilding the steering shaft mount at the dash. I am eliminating the bushing, replacing it with a flange bearing, and replacing all the shims and cotter pin with a collar w/set screws.
bobert94 38 #5 Posted January 20, 2015 my guess its used to hold the shims & flange bushing up during assembly to keep them from falling to the bottom of the shaft?
MalMac 1,332 #6 Posted January 21, 2015 I looked up my 94 314-8 and it has a O-ring listed also. I checked the tractor and there is no O-ring on it. I bought this tractor new and it had set most of its life and still looks new. Wonder if it's from drawings made prior to manufacturing and that piece was eliminated from actuall production but drawings were not corrected.

buckrancher 2,694 #8 Posted January 22, 2015 (edited) my guess its used to hold the shims & flange bushing up during assembly to keep them from falling to the bottom of the shaft? I would say that this is probably right I have seen the extra shims down at the top of the gear but with no o-ring which I would say had weathered and broke off Edited January 22, 2015 by buckrancher
