Looks like fun!! Reminds me of being back up north. The pond was about 800 yards behind the house. I was clearing it so my daughter could skate. I was just about done and decided to make one more pass. I suddenly discovered that the ice was too thin to support the GT-1100 I was using. In we went totally submersing the tractor and me, in Carharts, up to my chest. Getting a 4x4 tow truck  with a snow plow on a Super Bowl Sunday was a trick but I found one.

Lucky you saved yourself and your Horse!

The poor Horse I'm sure went into heated storage, yes?   :angry-nono:

Yes, I did. I lucked into a guy with a 4x4 tow truck with a snow plow. He had to plow a path on a ridge at the rear of our property. Only able to get about 100' from the pond he had to winch it out. The tractor kept catching on the ice and he actually overheated the winch but he finally got it. He towed it off the ridge to the road south of us then back to the house. A total of about a mile. I took the seat inside and removed the cover. Once the tractor thawed I changed all the fluids and took all the precautions I could think of. I expected the worst because the motor was still running when it went in. Danged if that Briggs didn't start right up and ran fine. The only damage was the clutch rod that got all bent up. I got lucky. Even luckier was the fact that the tow truck driver who spent 3 hours there on a Super Bowl Sunday only charged me $40. He said that will cover his costs and the entertainment value that day was priceless.

That might not be a good idea! I can attest to the fact that the water is a tad chilly this time of the year.

I remember as kids we cleared the lake with our hands and snow shovels. I wonder if kids today

still do that.

OK, now I have somethng else to add to my "Bucket List".

In 24 years of owning and driving Wheel Horses, I have never once given thought to driving one on a frozen body of water like a pond, lake or river!!!

Threads like this are another terrific reason for being a membr of Red Square!

Thank you kiotikin for starting this thread and posting some great pics!

I never have but when I was growing up the neighbor always used his WH to clear the snow on the pond. My brothers and I use to wear old boots and hang on the back of the tractor while the neighbor drove around in circles. Great fun.

I can remember doing this years ago when we had a small pond in the back yard, about the size of a hockey rink.  I never broke thru but believe me, it was always on my mind!

I too have had some nerve racking experiences over the years of clearing the pond. I always start on the shallow end of the pond. A coupple times I drove onto at and get ready to start the blower when the rear end would break through. Ugh, so I walk up to the tool shed and get the Kioti tractor out and the neighbor kid and go back and pull the wheel horse out. There have been times I'm blowing or blading the surface when I hear this sharp crack over the sound of the engine and see the surface with large cracks in it. Sometimes oozing pond water.

I try to check thickness before heading out. I get my drill and a wood drill bit to put some holes in. Then with a wire with a hook on the end measure the thickness. The worst part of keeping the pond clear is after a good snow fall. The snow insulates the surface and turns it into slush even in sub freezing tempature. That about takes care of the skating for the year.

Well the grand kids just text me and want to come over skating. :) So off I go.Thanks Kiotiken

Ice Road Wheel Horses, anybody for hauling their load of fire wood across a frozen pond. It's been years since it stayed cold long enough that you could even walk on ice around here and then you had better drag a boat with you.

Well I got two of the five grandkids out.(14/12),the ice could of been better. The temp got to 35 today and put a just enough slush down to make it not as slippery as nice frozen ice surface. But had some fun then went into warm shop to listen to the games. Sorry to see the Pack lose but what a game the Seahawks had. Here's a couple pics of the grand kids.post-12504-0-02053100-1421632217_thumb.jpost-12504-0-02053100-1421632217_thumb.jpost-12504-0-34755400-1421632265_thumb.jpost-12504-0-77985100-1421632298_thumb.jpost-12504-0-85156300-1421632324_thumb.j
