520 H Starting Issues

Recommended Posts

Jay

I am new to Wheel Horses. My friend has had one for years and I thought they are pretty cool and went out and bought the same model he has, a 520-H. I used it all of last yearwith a few minor issues that I fixed asap in order to continue using it. But in October, I took my loader off of it and put on the dual stage snowthrower and put it in my enclosed trailor for winter. I went to start it in Janurary, and seeing as I had nt touched it until then the battery was dead. I charged the battery but yet it didn't start. I have since been able to get it to start a couple of times in order to get it into my garage so that I can look over it and try to fix it.

My issue is that even though i got it running, it would stop running with a few minutes, (3-5). I have gone over the mower several times and cant find anything, but while i was working on it of course something broke. I now have and issue more than what i wanted im sure. There is a 3 prong connector (don't know if that is the relay i read about) in front of the battery, but in the engine. There are two of them connected to each other, and one that is alone, The one that is alone is now about to break off and will be needed to replace that part i believe.

Also, i do not do much electrical work so diagrams didn't help.

Before i stored it away i did notice that it was starting to take a hair longer to start up, i chalked it up to the cold temperature outside. Not sure if this is an electric issue or not.

Gas filter IS getting gas to it, i removed to spark plugs and cleaned them with some sand paper and reinstalled them, still nothing, is it possible that the starter solenoid is bad?

Thanks for any responces guys, I have been looking on this site few awhile now and have seen helpful comments.

Check engine compression.  I had a similar problem with my 520H, real hard starting...  I found 60 psi compression on the rear cylinder

How would I do that?

Also about the 3 pronged piece, the single prong has broken off, and not sure what to do as of now.

I bought this from a guy that redoes them and gets them going, it does not have all the gauges, and the ones that I do have do not work. I would really love to basically have it redone and new gauges installed and new wiring done on the whole tractor, but cost is a huge effect for me right now.

am not able to get the spark plugs with a wrench or a "spk plug" tool. Any suggestions? I have the plugs as hand tight as I can get them.

Based on some of your questions and answers you may be better off purchasing a small engine repair manual that goes through the basics.  A compression test is a pretty simple thing to do.  Hand tight is not good enough, you need some basic tools if you are going to keep these tractors going by yourself.  If you are missing gauges it sounds like the wiring is a mess.  We could go back and forth a hundred times and our suggestions would be guesses at best.  Out of all the tractors in the Wheel Horse line the 520H is the most complicated with wiring and having the Onan is one of the most problematic.  You can't beat them when they are running right but are costly to fix.  Maybe someone close by can lend a hand...

Thanks. My buddy said that the plugs could be a cause, I have tools to do it but not sure I can get access to plus ATM. I will need to take the chute of the snowthrower to open the hood more. Thanks for you help bud.
