Won't stay wide open

Recommended Posts

Dans wheelhorse

Hello all, I got a new to me 89 518h, the throttle won't stay wide open, anything past half it just slides down to half. I've changed the plugs, oil, gas and air filters. It may have been answered before but I can't find it.

I believe there's a nut holding the control together, might have to tighten that so it has some friction to hold it up. I don't own a 518 so don't know that for sure, but that would be my guess.

You may be able to crimp the connector to acquire a better drag to keep the throttle from vibrating down. Vice grips work well for this Just don't get too carried away with the grips

My 84 GT1600 does the same thing. When I push the throttle up past about 60% the engine speed increases like it's supposed to, but then it works it's way back down to about 60%. I think this is the governer working and allowing for a throttle increase in case the engine bogs down under load. I THINK I read this in my manual but I'll have to double check.

Here's what I've found: throttle control must be set at 3/4 to full speed when operating.

Looks like I'll need to get out there and tighten my throttle assembly as well!
