same but different

Mornin' all and Merry Christmas. Just curious about it but I have 2 identical 414's (bought 1 for parts but it's in some better shape than 1st one) and they are the same except for the carbs. One does not have the hi speed adjustable jet and the other does. Both are 89 models with M14 engines. Kohler run out of one or something you guess?

BTW will redo the rough one and make it a back up, what engine paint would any recommend? Thanks, John

I don't know what carb these came with originally from the factory, but it's quite possible somebody replaced the original carb on one of them, maybe with a Walbro fixed jet model.

Use the one with both adjustments. I am not a fan of the walbro fixed jets!

Will have to use both since I have two horses. Was just curious about it. Got to rewire for a new switch first. Wiring has been really hacked on this one. Thanks, John

I would say someone just changed the replaced the carb on one of them. Its very common for someone to just put a new carb on a tractor if there having problems with the old carb as long the fixed jet carb is in good working order it should work fine you can probably get a few more rpms out of the adjustable carb

John,  I hope this late post is of some help. I bought a 414-8 that was overall in good running order but the carb (adjustable) was completely worn out. I think it was pulling more air around the throttle shaft than it was through the air cleaner LOL. Anyway I bought a new non adjustable carb to replace the adjustable carb, put it on and Presto, The M14 came back to life just like I hoped it would! Still running good to this day, and I have not done a thing to it since but change the oil and battery.

Thanks all, need to fix the hacked wiring and possibly a new solenoid and I'll see how it runs. Only shows less than 800 hrs, but spent a lot of time outside. John
