formariz 12,019 #1 Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) So today I was going to use the swamp rat to haul the lawn furniture into storage. It has been sitting gor a couple of weeks but it always starts right up. This time just very white smoke comes out of exhaust ( this never happened before ) and nothing . It has very strong spark as always. Drained entire fuel system thinking water in there from crappy gas. Still nothing. Occasionally while cranking I hear a metallic tap coming from valve train area. Is it possible that it "dropped" a valve from a broken spring? Edited December 2, 2014 by formariz
Mr. 856 170 #2 Posted December 3, 2014 easy way to tell would be pull the head. I don't think valve springs break often do they?
formariz 12,019 #3 Posted December 3, 2014 This is an engine with less than 100 hours on it. If I can't start it I am going to have to pull it out to open it . Bummer.
Mr. 856 170 #4 Posted December 3, 2014 Can you feel anything doing a "thumb test" through the plug hole?
formariz 12,019 #5 Posted December 3, 2014 Not going to be easy to get my finger in there . It's on a rj with an eighty five pound weight attached to the inside of hood. It's actually easier to remove engine than to remove hood.
woodchuckfarmer 333 #6 Posted December 3, 2014 Pull the breather and take a look in there....Wayne
WH nut 553 #7 Posted December 3, 2014 Change the spark plug
formariz 12,019 #8 Posted December 3, 2014 Change the spark plug Did that too. Strong spark but still no ignition!
Mr. 856 170 #9 Posted December 3, 2014 If you have good spark and fuel then its time to move on. As mentioned pull the valve cover and take a peak. Any chance the flywheel sheared the key and now your timing is off?
formariz 12,019 #10 Posted December 3, 2014 (edited) Unlikely but anything is possible. I am leaning towards a valve issue because of occasional metallic ping coming from valve area while cranking. Once I assemble this transmission I am working on I am going to pull engine and see what's going on. Edited December 3, 2014 by formariz
buckrancher 2,694 #11 Posted December 4, 2014 could be as simple as a valve keeper came off
formariz 12,019 #12 Posted February 19, 2015 Update on this one. Still a little puzzeled about it but its working. Second spark plug I tried had spark but tractor still wouldn't start. When out and got a third spark plug, put it in and started right up like nothing happened. I don't know what was up with the first two spark plugs.
slammer302 2,156 #13 Posted February 19, 2015 I have hh60 did the same thing I guess its picky about its spark plugs
Don1977 604 #14 Posted February 27, 2015 You can have spark out in the open and none when under compression with some plugs. I would say you got some bad plugs.
