motor12 367 #1 Posted November 30, 2014 When I turn the key all the way to the right the starter will engage, the key stays in that position after the engine starts. Should the key return to the left a bit once the engine starts to disengage the starter. Today I was running my 854 and ran out of gas, the engine quit running but the starter was engaged and kept turning the engine over without me touching the key. Is the switch shot or do I have to return the key to the left after the engine starts to shut off the starter. Thanks
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,496 #2 Posted November 30, 2014 Do you also have a starter button? Either way you do not want to run that motor again until you have this figured out. I thought that model (like my 702's ) has the switch to turn to the on position and then the starter button starts it.
wallfish 17,890 #3 Posted November 30, 2014 Sounds like the spring inside the switch is broken. Yes, the key should return to the middle position after starting the tractor.
Racinbob 11,879 #4 Posted November 30, 2014 (edited) It's momentary to the start position and it should return to the run position when released on an 854. No separate start button. Motor12, it's time for a new switch. Edited November 30, 2014 by Racinbob
WheelHorse79 271 #5 Posted November 30, 2014 I don't believe the 854's had a separate starter button, but used key start only. My Dad's original 854 never had a separate started button back in the day, and neither does my current 854. I believe the starter button was retired after '63.
