I bought another one...

Well, I started figuring how much it was going to cost to buy all the stuff I need for my 633 and I quickly realized that I could buy a complete tractor for what it would cost for just a few parts. So, I found this 753 on e-bay and WON!

That is the only pictures I have of it right now... I'll post more when I get it home!

It has an incorrect steering wheel, but looks to be complete! :banghead:

Here are some bits from the description...

Ran fine and in good overall shape. Last used in the winter of 2004 to plow my driveway and it has been sitting untouched since.

Overall this tractor is in decent general condition and has a good, strong engine that ran with no smoke or wierd noises. It has not been started in over 4 years (but the gas was drained prior to storage) so expect to do some tinkering to get it going again. Will need a battery.

There is minimal rust and what is there is only surface rust. The hood has some bumps and dents in the grille area that do not show in the photo. It does have a drawbar (trailer hitch). without digging a bunch of stuff out of the way, it is tough for me to get any additional pictures of this thing....sorry.

Plus, I will be able to pick it up fairly close to me... (1-1/2 hours away)!!!!!

I told my youngest daughter (Courtney) about it and she INSISTS that she go with me when I pick it up! :banghead: She's hooked.... :USA:

That 753 belongs/belonged to Steve (Wh500special). He had it for sale here also, along with a couple of other tractors. Congratulations on purchasing it.

Glad it's going to the home of a RS member! :omg:

I always get nervous selling stuff since I am one of those guys who is paranoid that something will go wrong...I could never sell stuff for a living because I'd starve! But I think this is a good tractor and if you don't want it when you come after it I have no problems keeping it.

This one was a money loser for me  , but I am glad it's going to a good home :banghead: . Jon, you'll be only the fourth owner of this one excluding the dealership. It was originally sold new in St. Louis by El-Mel and later taken in on trade for a newer one. The second owner bought it and mounted a cultivator to it for their semi-commercial vegetable farm in Florissant, MO. It went back to El-Mel again from there where I bought it and hauled it to South Bend.

By the time I got it the original seat had been replaced with a monsterous, padded office chair. I jettisoned that for the pan seat and planned to fix it up but put it way on the back burner. Then I moved, had two kids, and realized I have way too much stuff...

Hopefully it will be a good parts machine for you! The motor was a good one and I don't recall it having any issues other than being a touch ugly.

I am hoping to get it too IN this weekend and I'll letcha know when you can retrieve it. :USA:

Actually I was just kidding, a reference to everyone wanting pan seats recently...

I'm going to fix both of mine. But if I have a bad welding day, then I might need one...

I'm still trying to decide what to do with a pair of 854's and a couple LR's I have. If I ever get off the pot I will let you know.

I planned to keep only the 701 as a representative round hood/front engined tractor, but am wondering what to do with all those attachments if I sell off too many tractors...Can't sell them since it took my decades to find them all!

Steve,

I still might be interested in a snow plow and rear axle bracket for my 753. Keep me in mind! :banghead:

She's home!!! Made the trip today with Stephanie (wife) and my youngest girl Courtney (she stayed home sick today... wink, wink)

ahorse001.jpg

I unloaded it, pulled the hood... cleaned out the carburetor and changed the oil... I put a new battery in it and it fired right up!!! There is some slight valvetrain noise and the transmission is pretty noisy... Has a grinding/ bearing sound at all times and it is really noticible while in neutral without the clutch pushed down.... I think, between the 633 and the 753, I can make a GREAT tractor out of the 2.... :banghead:

I did notice that the rear track width is much wider than the 633... by about 4"... Anybody have any idea why? :D

Here's some pics...

Crap, this isn't what I wanted to hear...

It isn't the belt slapping the guard is it? If it is something internal on the engine I guess sitting for a few years a may have caused it. It seemed in good shape, but it has been stored for a while. I didn't check the oil in the rear end either, so perhaps it is dry.

If it turns out to be something you don't want to tackle I will take the thing back.

THIS is why I hate selling stuff! And I guess the other lesson learned is not to just let your tractors sit around for so long like I have...

Jon, it was nice to meet you and your family. Anytime you're up this way you're welcome to drop by.

looks like the hubs are not up on the axles right...something is definately wrong...the wheels are too far out...looks like a ranger steering wheel also

i wouldn't get too wound up about a little noise in the rearend. my 753 is a little noisy too. even after the rebuild. run it around a little to get it warmed up, then change the lube, see if that helps. next spring i plan to change mine out a couple more times after running some tranny fluid -kerosene mix through it, to make sure it is clean because i neglected to take the differential apart. :imstupid: too big a hurry to get it together cause my butt was itchin to get in the seat. :banghead:

My best guess is the transmission has been changed at some time. :omg:

Wish the guy that put the narrow trans in my 953 had found one like yours. :banghead:

Sick days are necessary when it comes to a Wheel Horse. :horseplay:

Steve, It's no big deal... it just needs some "lovin"....

It is definately a bearing noise... I'm gonna probably swap in another transaxle... As this one will probably be too wide with the dual ags :USA: ... so, this should take care of the noise too... :omg:

It was nice to meet you too... I'm sure we'll cross paths again... :banghead:

The hubs are on all the way.... the end of the axle is flush with the outer edge of the hub....

Custom axles maybe? It's kinda neat, but I don't think it would be ideal with the dual ag's that are going on it...

Yeah, the steering wheel is gonna make way to a more shallow one...

I never noticed it was wider, but it looks obviously different to me now that I compare to pictures in the "pictures" section. Heck I even had it parked next to an 84 in the shed and didn't see the difference. I'm sure that if I had hung a deck under there that it would have been obvious too...

Perhaps when I removed the wheels to strip and repaint them I put them on backwards? Try flipping them around, maybe that will bring the track back inline.

Or just pretend it has the ultra rare wide track option....

Man, this thing is turning into less and less of a good deal for you. Let me know if I can help in some way.

Experiencing seller's remorse,

Steve

The rear end is from a 70's Commando 800 / 1973 8hp 4 speed style tractor.

These tractors used the 10 inch rear rims with a "center offset", requiring longer axles in the transmission to maintain the proper track width. :banghead:
