callum12 257 #1 Posted November 12, 2014 Hi, I have recently acquired a A-800 ranger, these as standard don't have any form of lighting but i'd quite like two LED headlights. as these tractors don't have lights I'm sure the charging system won't cope with much, so what would be the maximum wattage of LED i could use? I'm not interested in mega brightness, just nice white LEDs that light my path and look good on the tractor! Thanks all, Callum (P.S: i'm sure this question as been asked billions of times before!!, sorry!)
Molon_Labe 731 #2 Posted November 12, 2014 Callum if your uses an 1156 bulb you might want to consider these - 7.5 watt Cree LED's http://www.ebay.com/itm/JDM-2-pcs-1156-Plug-Play-Socket-Front-Turn-Signal-White-CREE-7-5W-12V-Bulbs-N3-/181581973072?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a47210650
callum12 257 #3 Posted November 12, 2014 it doesn't have any bulbs, so i'd be wiring them in my self. my plan was to simply splice it into the leads coming off the battery with a simple toggle switch mounted to the dash. that way i could even use the the lights when the engine is off. my question is what is the maximum wattage i could use that the charging system could keep up with? by the way the battery is a 12V 17Ah motorcycle battery, should i consider getting a car sized battery for lights? thanks, Callum
WH nut 553 #4 Posted November 13, 2014 If you use LEDs you wont have to worry about a THING Leds draw almost nothing
meadowfield 2,712 #5 Posted November 13, 2014 I used 68led ones from that auction site, they daw barely anything compared to normal bulbs.
Save Old Iron 1,571 #6 Posted November 13, 2014 (edited) Your choice of LED may depend on how you intend to mount lighting on the tractor. If you intend to update the front of the hood area to loose the white WH logo plate and install a "light bucket" into the hood, you would choose LED's fashioned to replace the original bayonet style lamps. If you choose to mount LED lamp housings somewhere on the tractor, your choices are nearly unlimited - but you may need to drill holes or clamp housings onto painted surfaces. callum12 257 #7 Posted November 13, 2014 thanks guys, yes i plan to mount the lights on the side of the bonnet like most old tractors. so two 3W LEDs will be okay? thanks, callum
Anglo Traction 761 #8 Posted November 13, 2014 Callum, You might want to do some info searches on your engine first. You have a replacement 10hp Tecumseh 'Pull Start' fitted ? A 'Pull Start' may have a Single magneto system for the ignition only? (some have a dual Mag I believe) . ......... Maybe worth obtaining a copy of the Techy Service Manual and check the spec to see what you have and go from there. There are a few Techy experts on here that are way more knowledgeable than I. callum12 257 #9 Posted November 13, 2014 yeah, mine is the 10Hp with pull start though it also has a starter motor, i've got all the PDFs of the engine so i'll look through. thanks, Callum
callum12 257 #10 Posted November 16, 2014 i have found this wiring diagram, does this look any good? i have picked up a set of chrome driving lamps with 55W bulbs in but i will be replacing them with LEDs. thanks callum
Save Old Iron 1,571 #11 Posted November 16, 2014 Callum, this circuit will work fine but is overkill for LED's. There is no need for a relay as the LED's will draw minimal current. Wire the lights directly into a switch used to power 12 volt DC lamps. The switch will go to a fuse holder then the fuse holder to the 12 volt battery - or 12 volt tap on the ignition switch. callum12 257 #13 Posted November 16, 2014 thanks save old iron, so i'm literally making a circuit as made lower school years! the LED bulbs I've been looking at are 7.5W each, though there are some that are 1.5W each. thanks all, Callum
Digger 66 3,488 #14 Posted November 16, 2014 so i'm literally making a circuit as made lower school years! Yes , but keep in mind they're polarity-sensitive .
callum12 257 #15 Posted November 16, 2014 yep, i keep that in mind. thank you, Callum
