aaubrey96 0 #1 Posted November 10, 2014 My 414 will not charge at an idle the voltage from the ground to the positive is 12 volts. I know that on a car its supposed to be like 14.4 are these tractors the same or is 12 normal?
Geno 1,928 #2 Posted November 11, 2014 Depending on the year it may very well be normal. My 414 is an 87 and has the 3A system. As you increase throttle it should get stronger up to around 14V at WOT. The headlamps will also get brighter and dimmer depending on throttle.
aaubrey96 0 #3 Posted November 11, 2014 I'm pretty sure mine is also an 87 and the headlights do the same. But as I increase throttle it's staying at 12V Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Save Old Iron 1,564 #4 Posted November 11, 2014 tractors use the same flooded lead acid battery technology as automobiles. the chemistry of the battery requires at least 13.8 volts to charge properly.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,549 #5 Posted November 11, 2014 The 1987 414-8 model 31-14K802 has a 3 amp unregulated charging system so output at idle would be minimal. At full rpm it should put out 3 amps. You have a 2nd stator that supplies AC current to the headlamps and tail lamps so they only work with the engine running and the higher it revs the brighter the lights. Are you having a problem with a weak battery? Garry
Geno 1,928 #6 Posted November 11, 2014 (edited) Garry is right, mine is an 87 also. The most likely cause is the diode, it is near the 4 pin connector at the engine on the left side sitting on the tractor. It is in the harness toward the rear side of the connector (the side that goes toward the rear of the tractor). Do you have a meter that will do a diode check? Or you could just replace it, it's a $5 part. It's the only part I've replaced on those for charging problems but there is a small chance yours is something different. aaubrey96 0 #7 Posted November 11, 2014 Hmm. I've got 0.4 amps wide open Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Geno 1,928 #8 Posted November 11, 2014 Do the headlamps get brighter at higher RPM?
aaubrey96 0 #9 Posted November 11, 2014 Yes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Geno 1,928 #10 Posted November 11, 2014 It's a split system, if the headlamps are getting brighter the charging system is ok. Check the diode.
aaubrey96 0 #11 Posted November 11, 2014 I'm only seeing this 5 wire connector and no diode Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Geno 1,928 #12 Posted November 11, 2014 Thanks for the help, I was wrong on a couple of things, it's been a really long day. 5 wire is correct. Also the diode is toward the engine side of the connector.
aaubrey96 0 #13 Posted November 11, 2014 Under the flywheel cover? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Geno 1,928 #14 Posted November 11, 2014 It's been awhile since I did mine and I can't remember. I just went and looked at mine and the diode is outside the cover but I may have moved it there in case I had to replace it again later. It is in the wire on the engine side of the connector though. aaubrey96 0 #15 Posted November 11, 2014 (edited) Ok got it. I have to find the tester Edited November 11, 2014 by aaubrey96
Geno 1,928 #16 Posted November 11, 2014 It's the white wire.
aaubrey96 0 #17 Posted November 11, 2014 Hmm. Mine seams to be on one of the yellow ones. Looks like someone cobbed it because the engine side is yellow and the plug side is black Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Geno 1,928 #18 Posted November 11, 2014 Here's the manuals for it - The diagram shows a white wire but could be wrong, or someone has been playing around in there before. Page 24 of the wiring download is your tractor.
aaubrey96 0 #19 Posted November 11, 2014 Well the power flows both ways so you were right. Thanks for the help. I've ordered the new one and hopefully this is my only problem Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

aaubrey96 0 #22 Posted November 24, 2014 Well I followed the institutions as best as I could and I think I put it in backwards. So now im gonna have to take it out and turn it around. The part that got me is they never specified which way it went In. I thought I had it but I guess not Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
