Hodge71 665 #1 Posted October 15, 2014 Hey guys...new project, new problem. It is time to get the snow herd ready and I replaced the battery in my boy's Charger 12. Its been bad for a year now and I never did anything about it because he doesn't really use it all summer long and last winter I would just jump it off the battery charger or 18 auto and it would run fine.He hasn't used it since Spring and In fact its been 6 months since it even has been started. Well the issue is low voltage. I had it last year, and like I said the battery was bad so I never did anything about it. I dont want to change a voltage regulator and have that not be the issue. Anyway to check for sure? We ran it last night and with it running its got 12.9 volts at the battery terminals. I know it show have roughly 14.5 to charge the battery ....correct? Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. I was told that it could have a bad reluctor ring. I always thought they were more of an ABS or ignition timing control on cars. I think they mean alternator correct? Isn't that whats built into the flywheel on the Kohlers? Never had any major electrical issues like this so its all new to me. When dads regulator went bad on his 73 12 auto...it was obvious....caught fire...lol... I just don't want to spend 100 bucks for a voltage regulator and it doesn't fix the problem. Thanks, Jeff
oldredrider 2,553 #2 Posted October 15, 2014 Jeff you could have a weak connection at the regulator or ignition switch. Also if the regulator is not grounded REAL well it could cause low voltage to the battery. Cheap and easy to check. Hope it's that simple.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #3 Posted October 15, 2014 Post all the numbers off the engine's data decal. The 1970 Charger 12 used 3 different engines. Garry
pfrederi 18,566 #4 Posted October 15, 2014 Did you check the AC voltage being provided on the two white wires that feed the regulator. If it is a 15 amp system you should get at least 28 volts at full throttle. 10 amp system at least 20 volts AC. If you have correct AC voltage than issue is most likely regulator. If you have low AC voltage stator should be checked.
Hodge71 665 #5 Posted October 16, 2014 Well the engine is a 1985 It apparently was replaced by the shop where I bought the tractor for $175 last year. The tractor didnt run so I drained the tank of the 30 year old gas, ran a new filter and it started right up. It runs awesome. Doesnt smoke a puff and this thing worked its butt off plowing the 1/2 mile long drive at the farm til the 18 was finished in late January/early February. We had some serious snows during that timeand day in the 30-40 below zero range. It ran everytime. I didnt check for 28 volts Paul but now that I know what to look for I will as soon as I can
