Fordiesel69 226 #1 Posted October 13, 2014 The shaft that the steering wheel is on is very loose down below. It no longer meshes with the rack at times. How do you remove the shaft, and what parts need replaced. The rack is also loose, but that I beleive I can fix.
doc724 924 #2 Posted October 13, 2014 There is a big nut at the end of the steering rack. Tighten it up. Older models did not have a nut but relied on shim washers to keep the rack snug to the pinion (the gear on the steering column). Before you shim or tighten, align the steering wheel so that when the front wheel are pointing forward, the steering wheel spokes are they way they should be (horizontal in the case of your 312 for example) To do this, there is a collar with a set screw on the steering shaft that needs to be loosened so that you can pull up on the steering wheel, rotate as needed, reinsert the lower end into the bottom bushing and then re-tighten the collar. I would be surprised if there er any significant wear.
