dcrage 630 #3 Posted October 12, 2014 Careful -- There are lots of stories on this forum about "mushrooming" the end of these pins and then never getting them out short of drilling them out -- And some of the hitch pins only go out one way, don't know if yours is like that

JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,498 #5 Posted October 12, 2014 Might need a grinding wheel on that. Not positive of the direction. Glenn
groundhog47 347 #6 Posted October 12, 2014 (edited) You might be able to rent a ball joint press, they are pricy to buy, from local auto parts store, start with a penetrant oil for a day or so first. they are pricy to buy. Also could try search at local Pawn Shop for a used one, one with a open end so shaft will pass through or rig up a big c clamp and deep socket to get it started. Too much hammering could break the tran case end. Something close to this might also be rentable and work: http://www.amazon.com/OTC-6295-Front-End-Service/dp/B0002SRH7O/ref=sr_1_10/192-2585442-2602835?ie=UTF8&qid=1413142204&sr=8-10&keywords=ball+joint+press Edited October 12, 2014 by groundhog47
stevasaurus 23,237 #7 Posted October 12, 2014 One thing that works, if you think that pin is shot...and it looks like it, or will after grinding the ends...take a Saws All and cut the pin between the hitch and transmission on both sides...the piece in the trans will tap right out and the pieces in the hitch can enjoy a good soak in penetrating oil before you press them out. You will save yourself a lot of grief and time. You can make another pin from bar stock.
medman 4 #8 Posted October 12, 2014 i gotta jack it up and remove the left rear wheel, then see if it will come out
buckrancher 2,694 #9 Posted October 13, 2014 use a piece of alum. or brass to pound on you will need to drive it from both ends as the pin may be stuck in one end or both or the center case to break it loose otherwise you will just spread the "Y" of the hitch Drive it back and forth until the pin moves in all three places then you should be able too drive it out one way Brian
N3PUY 1,031 #10 Posted October 13, 2014 On mine I cut the pin flush on the right side and then used an air chisel with punch to drive it out to the left. It was extremely tight.
Ed Kennell 41,450 #11 Posted October 13, 2014 I drilled 2 1/8" holes and soaked with PB for weeks. Still did not loosen in the tranny lug. I did get the hitch free on the pin. Then cut the pin to get the hitch off and was able to drive the two pin pieces out of the hitch. Was not able to get the pin out of the tranny , so I drilled a 1/2" hole nearly thru and have it soaking now. Will use a 3/8" pin punch in he hole to drive it out after soaking. Tankman 3,523 #13 Posted October 13, 2014 Brass drift, oil, tap tap tap, more oil. Might take a few days. Do not use a steel drift pin! Repeat above daily.
oldredrider 2,553 #14 Posted October 13, 2014 I had a stuck pin on a Commando 800 that would NOT budge. Ended up drilling the hitch pin all the way through with a 1/2 drill bit. Then used a sawsall to cut two slots 90° apart and still had to drive out the two pieces with a hammer and drift punch. Saved that clevis hitch though and put a new pin in with lots of never seize.
KC9KAS 4,744 #15 Posted October 13, 2014 Ed did you put grease zerts into the holes when you got the old pin out!
Ed Kennell 41,450 #16 Posted October 13, 2014 I still didn't get my pin out. When I found the bad keyways in the axles, I left this one sit and used another tranny that I had. I will tap it for grease zerks when I get back to it sometime this winter.
