Muffler not seating

Recommended Posts

Today I took the exhaust and intake manifold off my 520H to adjust the valves and noticed on the rear cylinder the exhaust mount doesn't seat completely on the block.  It looks as if its bent or warped, the other side seats fine as does the front cylinder mount.  If the muffler is only seating partially on the block on the rear cylinder could this cause damage to the engine?  Is the only fix most likely a new muffler?

I'd try new exhaust gaskets and if you think its warped try a straight edge and see how much gap there is.

I put 2 new gaskets on today and tightened each bolt at a time and it is much more flush now, there may be a very small gap between the gasket and the block but it could also be the thick gasket.

I had a hard time getting mine to seal with new gaskets. A little aerosol hi temp copper gasket maker did the trick!

Aerosol gasket maker? Wow never even knew there was such a thing, how do you apply it? With the muffler installed?

Yes, good stuff. Spray it on muffler flanges and both sides of exhaust gaskets.
