it will only start up when I hold the spark plug wire to the side of the spark plug and jump aras soon as I put the wire on the plug it want to stall I take it back off and it idles back up again

Its sounds like the electrode is bad in the plug try a new plug and see if that helps

For some reason your plug will not supply sufficient spark to ignite the fuel with the normal high voltage from the coil.

When you increase the spark gap that increases the coil output voltage so the plug fires.

Problem with that is the higher voltage may be more than the plug wire insulation or the coil insulation can withstand and it burns a hole in the insulation. Then the spark takes the path of least restriction.
