Mag on a Cammando 6/1968

    I have a commando 6 that I have trying get running as a hobby or a learning tool about Tecumseh engines.. I put all new under the fly wheel. tried to see if I have spark. as soon as I turned the key there was smoke coming from under the flywheel so seem obvious that there was something wrong with the mag system when I bought it. is there a way to test the mag to see if it is bad. Also I looked in the manual there is a few to choose from all are 12v/3amp. I need the one that has the rectifier sys on it. I would like to find a used one. I do not want to a lot of $$$$$ in this it is just something to fool around with. Any info would be helpful. Gary     B......

If you had smoke from the flywheel area you hooked up your mag to 12v. Its shot now that the smoke has been let out
