rustbucket 4 #2 Posted October 10, 2008 i will expand on why i dont really know the models. i saw them in the fenced in lot of a local small engine shops back lot parked side by side and asked about them and they said that they where trade ins and they where undecided as to what they where going to do with em and i said id take em if they gave me a price. that was a week ago and they got ahold of me the other day on my celly and me and my dad are going to grab em tomarrows
TT-(Moderator) 1,160 #3 Posted October 11, 2008 You're going to go spend $500 on two tractors and you don't even know what they are? You better make sure they are at least garden tractors, and not the "tinny" throwaway lawn tractors.

rustbucket 4 #8 Posted October 12, 2008 well lets see here i got the two today both are 90's models the first is a 1996 13-38 XL and the second is a 1999 17-44 HXL both run very nicely but the HXL needs brake and deck cable adjustments as the other needs minor work but they are solid. TT-(Moderator) 1,160 #9 Posted October 12, 2008 the first is a 1996 13-38 XL and the second is a 1999 17-44 HXL Well...... at least you got Wheel Horse stickers. :banghead:
rustbucket 4 #10 Posted October 12, 2008 the newbies together. the one without rear bagger has the recycler kit installed on the deck. my 13-38 XL my 17-44 HXL model. yes they have the plastic hoods and all but not a single crack or ding on either of them and briggs engines run like tops not a single issue. rustbucket 4 #11 Posted October 12, 2008 http://s276.photobucket.com/albums/kk26/ahlizare/ all my pictures and those i havent posted here of my machines as well as the show.
rustbucket 4 #12 Posted October 13, 2008 Okay I got these both for 250$ each and was told that the 17-44 had a blown head gasket and the 13-38 had a bad deck engage cable. Today i poked around on them and found the 17-44 was actualy missing a brake lever return spring on the actuator lever and thus had locked up brakes the engine runs great no compression leaks or anything . I had a spring laying around and put it on and boom fixed. Needs new belts for deck and drive but mowed realy nice with recycler deck and kit on it. The 13-38 is missing the deck engagement cable all together but is still available threw Toro so will be ordering and installing that soon.
rustbucket 4 #13 Posted October 13, 2008 The hydro belongs to my step mom since she has now contracted the bug and needs a machine with the step threw design and easier control set up. the newer TORO designed machine works for what she wanted and needed. The gear drive I am thinking will be my dads. I have my eyes on something else mentioned a bit lower down.
linen beige 15 #14 Posted October 13, 2008 Well...... at least you got Wheel Horse stickers. That one was outta the park! :D You should almost be ashamed of yourself Terry......almost. But they do look like they might serve ya well. Reckon them locked brakes had anything to do with the worn belts? Glad to hear your step-mom has been bitten. rustbucket 4 #16 Posted October 13, 2008 Worn belts had not a thing to do with the locked brakes. The dumb arses at the tractor place i got these from took the brake arm return spring off so they could talk the guy into buying a green machine. same with the other machine. They claimed it was a blown head gasket that was making it not run properly. there is nuthing wrong belt wise other then i just want to put new ones on cause these look like the originals. you know i do realise alot of you here dont like the newer Toro built ones but guess what? i got my eyes on a 312-8 at the place. They will be calling me on it when the guy trades it in for a green one. and it has the older K series kohler on it with front and belly tatchmatics. :banghead:
rustbucket 4 #17 Posted October 13, 2008 also if you look at my signature neither of these two are there cause i dont truely own em my step mom and dad do. hint hint
rustbucket 4 #18 Posted October 14, 2008 at least i dont own a single green thing in my collection of off breeds and pure breeds..... and that means tractors the back pack blower dosnt count.

wh500special 2,256 #20 Posted October 14, 2008 For a riding mower, I think the XL series are actually pretty nice little units. Very nimble and better cutters than most of the stuff that predates them. A friend of mine has one and he even plows his driveway with it in the winter and after a few years hasn't had any reliability issues. Of course, he doesn't expect 30 years of service from the thing either since the only thing "Wheel Horse" about them is the name on the decal. They do , of course, lack the toughness and durabilty of the classic designs and will probably never be popular with most collectors. But if they make your family happy that's pretty important too. The only real downside to them I can see is that they probably haven't bottomed out in value yet... After calling the guys at the dealership names though, you'd better hope they don't read this message board or the price on that 312 might go up a bit! BPjunk 184 #21 Posted October 14, 2008 Jason, You could fix those up and more then double your money next spring ........ exspecialy the two bagger unit! Wild Bill P.S. We went pretty close to your house while up in Pee Ya as we got on the North East Exstension of the Turnpike at the I-80 interchange and headed south. :USA:
rustbucket 4 #22 Posted October 14, 2008 I apolagise for being a wee bit stand offish and getting a bit angry and also for calling good people names. i do realize that they are toro's with the name slapped on the side. the thing we going to do with them after the belt changes is to swap them over to amsoil so the engines will be giveing us years of dependable service. bowtieguy 334 #24 Posted October 15, 2008 Jason...FYI, my "newest" WH used to be a 1969 model....but have to tell ya that a friend called me last friday and said to come pick up his WH cause he didn't have room to park his new Toro Z Turn....So for 3 bills I hauled his 312-H w/deck and snow blade (plus chains) and chrome hub caps, Mag 12 w/289 hours....home Compared with the rest of my faded red stuff, it looks so good I spent the evening WAXING the tractor with Maguires Classic wax...the hood still has the factor decal on top that says: Baja Tough....I thought it was put on by his kid until I read the literature that came with it....TORO tested them for 500 hours in the Baja desert...that was news to me??? Now this is my personal "town tractor"...wifeee never did like to see me mowing with those faded red things....said the neighbors must think we are so poor that we can't afford a new mower....hey does that mean that I cought up with the Jones now??? So hope your 312-8 looks good besides you rusty ole GT-
