pacer 3,177 #1 Posted September 27, 2014 Any thoughts on this thing? Has "Wheel Horse 616Z" decal on front (no Toro). I can't recall seeing any thing aside from a brief mention of horse ZTR's here. Its popped up in the area - if he should happen to lower the price - a good bit? it might get to be interesting. Reckon the deck would cross over to a tractor? decks are getting scarce... "Wheel Horse 46 in cut. with a 16 hsp. motor. not sure what is wrong with it. asking 400.00 or best offer" You got one of these Geno?
Geno 1,929 #2 Posted September 27, 2014 I probably will never own one. I'm starting to learn that when you play with the I don't want something that I can't find parts for or the parts are expensive.
wh500special 2,267 #3 Posted September 27, 2014 "Not sure what is wrong with it" isn't very promising. I'd bet on the transaxle as having trouble as that is the common failure mode in these things. They - the 600 series - were an early entry into the non-commercial zero turn market and worked quite well when new but time and abuse hasn't been kind to their specialized transaxle. Two hydrostatic assemblies are incorporated into a single aluminum casting. They tend to pop. The engine is an onan p216 vertical shaft. The deck is either a 42 or 48 on that one. The deck stamping is the same but brackets are vastly different than on your tractor. You can convert it, but there may be some welded piece you'd have to cut off. The holes will already be there to mount wheels and brackets from your deck. These tractors have been discussed before. You'll have to go look at it to determine its woes and value. pacer 3,177 #4 Posted September 27, 2014 Geno, you certainly have a valid point, parts for our tractors can sometimes be enough of a problem (thats one reason I was kinda eyeing that deck) Good info Steve, transaxle would certainly be a killer. I'll just watch it and see how its handled in the ad, He should pretty quickly find out/realize $400 is way off ... Its mostly a curiosity thing with me, not being at all familiar with any ZTR, especially a WH one.
KyBlue 655 #5 Posted September 27, 2014 WH ZTR is on my wish list ... but I'm not going to rush out and get one that's .... questionable. There is one being sold near me and Geno that is listed as parts only, and he wants 500 ... must think he has a goldmine ...
wh500special 2,267 #6 Posted September 27, 2014 Goldmine... He might be on to something. I bought a 724 a few years ago, mowed a while with it, the blew the left hydro. Bought another 724 with engine problems, did some parts exchanging, and resumed mowing. Blew the same trans a second time. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... I took then both apart and sold them on ebay a piece at a time. It was my own little Goldmine! Sometimes, value is hiding inside things.
motox25 36 #7 Posted September 27, 2014 $400 might not be a terrible price, could probably make it up in the Onan engine alone, granted it doesn't take much to get it running. I see those with dead hydros often. Ive seen one for sale here for $1000! Doubt he'll ever sell it at that price.
546cowboy 302 #8 Posted September 28, 2014 I had two of those. One 616Z and one 612Z. The 616 had a 42" deck and the 612 had a 38". Both were really nice to mow with. The 616z had a hydro out when I bought it and was partly disassembled. Had a heck of a time getting all the parts from the guy but luckily I had the missing Onan parts. The hydro was another story, I had to wait for almost a year before I found another 616Z with a non-running engine and good hydro's. Since I am in Indiana and it was in PA., I had to do some fancy dealing to get it here. The 612Z was at a local dealer I deal with a lot and who didn't want to mess with it. Neede some engine work ( Onan ) and since I had Onan parts because of my love of 520's it was an easy fix for me. The Hydro's are the weak point. You cannot find anyone who will work on them and parts are impossible to find even if you knew how to work on them. That seems to be the main problem with all the older ZTR's no matter who makes them.
