520HC

O.K. I probably should know, but I don't, so I will ask the experts:

What is the difference between a 520H and the 520HC?

It looks to me like the early 520H's did not have a swept front axle and the early 520HC's did. Did they also use a different model or spec'ed 20hp Onan?

Use the search feature here and you will find information on this topic. Short version is the HC model offered in 88 and 89 and had the swept forward front end. HC was the hydro commercial model and less gauges etc. Tranny is faster too. Here is a pic of mine with a custom made 3 point hitch

like Steve said, it was geared towards the commercial folks like the 418-C.

It didn't have any chrome on it, and no hood louvers. ^_^

Nice 520 Steve, do you have any details of the 3 point build to share?

Thanks for the nice comments and the info guys. The new 520H should fit in nicely with the rest of the Clydesdales. post-13051-0-86632000-1411823971_thumb.j

My 1989 520HC has hood louvers. I love the HC less gages, less chrome, swept front axle, and more speed...

This is very interesting...the one 520HC I owned had all five gauges (like the newer 520's) It had the swept axle, but no steering reduction, no chrome, and a bigger air cleaner.....and WAAAAAAY faster than the standard 520.

Can someone post a pic of the dash?

On the 520hc it also has a 1 7/16 crank out put like the old John Deeres instead of the 1 1/8 I don't know why they used that size crank.

The 5 gauges were the same,  The HC had only one indicator light on the panel above the gauges.

This is not a direct shot but you can see that besides the head light switch on the left there is only one indicator light on the right for oil pressure.

I Like the larger air cleaner, the motion control on the floor, the maroon decals, the absence of the brand name Toro, and the faster speed.

Many owners added the stainless steel cover over the muffler.

The 520HC is my favorite horse.  All ballz and built to work.

What would need to be changed to make a 520-H faster like the HC ?

I'd love to see a 520H and HC race side by side sometime to see the speed difference

I think it is a whole 2mph which is about a 25% increase. From what I understand from reading specs on here before, the 520 HC has approx 7mph top speed (which is the same as the C series black hoods that had the eaton transmission) and then they slowed it down in later years (possibly 90+) to 5 mph (approx same top speed as the 8 speed in 3rd gear high)

Don't quote me on this but i think you need a different gear on the pump/motor output and a different gear in the transmission itself so that they mate properly. (If you ambitious you could find one from an older C series and swap them in. I think they should swap right in.)
