Hi all.

We bought a wheelhorse second hand a number of years ago,and we are having trouble trying to track down the details to get a manual.for some reason model numbers and engine numbers dont match- go figure!

OK what we do have is:

14-38HXL

28N777

1174E1

9805005ZD-i have checked this code a number of times andi t ifs definately right on the plate.

can anyone tell me the year model and the actual model number?

And where oh where i can find ACTIVE links to all manuals possible for this please????

we are having troubles with it- when we jump start it off the car it will try and turn over, but when we put the sparkplug back in it losesallcompression. have NO IDEA what is wrong.

Thanks everyone,

Welcome to :rs:

Are you sure the engine is turning when you tried to jump start it. Some of those Briggs engines had a plastic gear on the starter. They wear out and the starter spins free not turning the engine. I've had to replace one on my mower.

That my guess too. The old flat head Briggs engines sometimes the valves would stick if it had been sitting a while, but that's an overhead valve engine it shouldn't have that problem.

Since all the manuals from Toro for the 14-38 are free to download, I would just download one or two of them to see if they may have something to help you.

The 1998 model 71219 was the only 14-38HXL to use the B&S 28N777-1174-E1 engine.

Tractor service manual

Transmission service manual

Wiring

We don'y have the engine manuals and that sounds like what you need.

thanks for all of your help. I am getting somewhere. Found a link to motor parts in a parts catalogue that confirmed it was a 71219. I cant rememebr how i found it- i had to go right through it and search.

IF i find a engine manual somewhere i will upload it through this post.

Valve clearance is critical on these engines.
